What is a category B+?


Category B is a driver's license that allows you to drive passenger cars with up to 3,500 kg of maximum permitted mass, including trailers. Additionally, you must meet age requirements that vary from state to state. Most states require drivers to be 18 years old. However, you will have to be 21 to travel across state lines or transport dangerous materials.

How do I obtain a category B+?

You must pass an Department of Transportation Physical Exam and have a clean driving history to be eligible for a CDL Class B. You must also meet the age requirements of your state. In the majority of states, you must be 18 years old in order to drive a Class B vehicle and 21 to drive on the interstate or transport hazardous materials. Additional requirements may differ by state. To add an endorsement, you must pass an additional knowledge test and sometimes a test of skills as well. If you wish to add an endorsement to your CDL (Class M), you will require an additional motorcycle road and knowledge test.

In certain countries, drivers who have a full category B licence can also drive vehicles restricted to category B1 or vice to. For instance a category B licence holders in Austria, Italy and Latvia can drive small lightweight vans that would be classified as a category C but not vehicles that are fully licensed under category A.

You might also require an additional endorsement to drive certain kinds of commercial vehicles. If you wish to become a delivery driver for companies like UPS or Amazon you'll require an CDL Class B. This permits you to drive passenger vans and small HAZMAT vehicles.

What is the cost to get B+?

Getting your driver's license of category B+ could cost you between $200 to $300. It could include training, practice and the theory and the practical test. You should also think about the cost of medical tests and eye exams. These could be required by law prior to taking the test.

Category B permits you to drive vehicles with the maximum weight that is authorized of up to 3,500kg including passenger cars. You can also haul a trailer up to this weight, provided your vehicle is certified for it. The maximum permitted mass of your trailer or vehicle can be found in Section 5 "Classification" on your vehicle registration certificate.

You can also apply for a driving licence in C1+E, Category C or D1. They permit you to drive a vehicle up to the legal limit of 26,001 pounds, depending on the restrictions and endorsements. You can also get an exemption to categories that are higher than the one you're already eligible for by passing an exam for the category you're interested in. For instance, if you pass the car (B) test you could apply to take the medium-sized lorry trailer test (category C1+E). This means you can add more vehicles to your licence without having to pass the lower categories first.

Where can I get a category B+?

There are several options to obtain the category B+ license. You can either complete driving instructor training at a recognized driving school, or you can take a private driving course and pass the required state exam. Both options are expensive, but you may have no other choice if you wish to drive vehicles with a weight of up to 3.5 tons.

A category B license allows you to drive vehicles that have an maximum mass of 3.5 tons and a trailer that's total weight does not exceed the towing vehicle. It also allows you to drive a tri-wheeled vehicle, provided that its maximum authorised mass is not more than 750 kg. A trailer must be equipped with an overrun brake.

You can determine whether you qualify for this privilege by looking up your driving licence information online. A medical certificate is required for a B+ category licence. The certificate must be renewed each when you renew your license. If you are over 60 and hold a category B+ licence, you will also need to take a medical test every five years.

In some EU Member States drivers with a category B driving license are able to upgrade their licences after passing higher categories of driving and/or towing tests. This is called "upgrading" your lower category licences. The higher categories are usually displayed on a colour-coded portion of the driving licence. In the majority of instances, the driving test you pass will also upgrade your licence to include the lower categories that you have completed. However, it is important to examine your driving license to make sure that you have the correct categories listed on it.
