Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles

Window handles are a crucial element of your uPVC windows and should be matched to the existing frame. The spindle size is what determines if your new uPVC handles will fit.

Take a look at the table below for a quick checklist for measuring your uPVC window handle's spindle length. This will help you to order the correct window handle replacement for your double-glazed window.

Espag Handle

Espag handles are the most commonly used style of handle found on windows made of Upvc (they're often found in timber and aluminium too). They have a square spindle that extends from the back of the handle and enters into the multi-point lock mechanism which is attached to the window. By turning the handle you control the mechanism that locks and unlocks the locking points around the window.

Espag window handles are available in many different styles and functions. Some come with the option of a push button to lock them in locking closed, and key-locking. (And fire-escape nonlocking when required.) Many of them meet the Secure by Design standard to add an extra layer of security. They also come with a variety of different lengths of spindles, which can be adjusted using spindle sleeves that reduce the size of the protruding spindle.

The espagnolette handles we offer have been tested by Yale to ensure they meet the strict standards you would expect from a reputable brand. They're suitable for timber, upvc and aluminium windows. We have a range of colors, and can match the handle to your existing hinges.

Another important aspect of handles made from espagnolette is their step height. This is the distance between the top of the handle and the point where it rests on the frame. It's important to have this in order to ensure a tight, secure fit. The majority of our handles are 43mm apart between the screw hole centres, which is industry standard.

You can pick between straight or Cranked handles. Cranked handles are great for situations where the espagnolette handle is going to be placed close to the edge of the frame as they will give you more room to open the window.

Our range of replacement handles made from upvc features a wide variety of finishes, styles and colors to match your home's decor, including polished chrome, antique brass and satin nickel. Some of our products even have a soft-close feature to minimize the sound of windows closing.

Cockspur Handle

The Cockspur Window Handle is a handle made specifically for the designer who wishes to offer their customers a fashionable and premium design. These handles work with either uPVC or aluminium windows. They function by incorporating a spur on the handle that is secured over the edge of the frame to secure the window. The window handle can be secured so that it opens only when pushed, providing additional security. The handle is available in five different finishes, both left and right handed versions. This allows the fabricators to accommodate more windows.

The cockspur window handles come supplied with 3 packing pieces of different thickness, allowing them to be adjusted to accommodate a wide range of backset sizes. Each packer can be removed from the handle nose or added to the step size to achieve an optimum distance of 9mm and 21mm. The handle comes in left and right handed models, with straight or curved noses.

It is important to measure the height of your current handle prior to purchasing a new handle to make sure it fits correctly. The wrong handle could cause a range of problems, including the inability for the window to be shut. This can be a problem for homeowners and cause unnecessary stress.

A handle called a cockspur is a form of handle that is found on older uPVC and timber windows, and also on some aluminium windows. These types of handles do not include any form of integrated window lock, as opposed to an Espag handle, which is found on modern windows, which include a shootbolt and Espagnolette bar window lock.

The handle that is a espagnolette (often abbreviated as 'espag" or "espag") is the most commonly used handle found on new uPVC Casement Windows. When you turn the handle of the espagnolette it activates an Encloser locking mechanism from Yale which is more secure than a conventional handle, such as a cockspur or British standard. This is because when you turn the espagnolette handle it rotates multiple locks within the window frame to secure it.

Repair My Windows And Doors with Tilt and Turn

These windows are popular with those who wish to increase the airflow in their homes as well as add a layer of security. As the name suggests, they offer the ability to turn and tilt which allows the window to open at 90 degrees, providing an opening of a smaller size or to drop down into a hopper design to allow for complete ventilation. The dual function provides them with a stylish appearance that can really add to the awe factor of your double glazed windows.

Tilt and turn windows tend to be more complicated than other styles of double glazed windows, which can increase their price because they require more parts and a lot of labor during installation. These windows are worth the investment because they can increase the value of your home and bring many advantages to your home.

A major benefit is that they allow you to clean windows from inside without having to use ladders outside. This is ideal for those who live in high-rise flats or buildings as it removes the need to leave and the risk of falling from the high height. Tilt and turn windows also offer additional security because windows are locked when in a tilted position and in this way, ensuring that any intruders are unable to open them from the inside.

Often you will find handles like this on European style windows, especially those in Germany, but you can also have them installed in UK homes. The uPVC replacement handle is typically a spindle based one and uses 7mm square spindles which is usually available in lengths of 32mm, 38mm or 44mm. The base of this handle is wider than other handles, which is why it's called a "tilt-safe" window handle. It can only be opened after the window is locked in a closed position or tilted.

If you want to replace the uPVC tilt and turn window handle, it is necessary to take the handle off the window by using the screwdriver. The screws are usually hidden behind a sprung loaded backplate. Simply lift it and twist it to reveal the two screw holes. With an instrument such as a ruler or tape measure, you can determine the distance between these two screw holes, which will typically be 43mm from centre to centre. Once you've determined the measurement you can then order the right handle size to fit your uPVC windows.

Aluminium Handle

Diecast aluminium is finished in a stylish matt black colour.

Aluminum handles are usually comprised of weatherproof and corrosion-resistant alloys. They are sturdy enough to meet the demands of the construction industry. It is easily shaped by industrial metal processing such as extrusion and forging and offers the flexibility and virtually unlimited design possibilities.

Furthermore, aluminum is extremely strong and has a high strength-to-weight ratio. It can withstand the harshest conditions. It is also resistant to ultraviolet radiation and can be utilized indoors. It is extremely versatile and can be coloured to match any style. From traditional emulated hardware metals to lively applications of hundreds of pure colors, the possibilities are endless.

Aluminum isn't rusty and doesn't require any maintenance. It is protected by an oxide layer that is natural. The protective layer can also be enhanced by a variety methods, including anodizing or powder coating, to offer additional resistance to corrosion. It is able to last for years without needing maintenance or cleaning. It is also 100% recyclable and environmentally friendly. This makes it a great option for commercial, residential, and industrial structures. It also offers thermal efficiency and is fire-safe.
