The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. The company considered North America as a growth market for Washlet bidets and toilets, in contrast to its "base" markets of Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure that the next generation would be able to read them. However, many words were being replaced by foreign words, such as dui, which is Bengali for verandah.

Origins

Incorporated in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic development. In the first half of 1917, Toto manufactured goods to meet the demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. To do this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered automation for production control, which helps to increase efficiency and a more consistent production.

In the late 1980s the company began to expand outwards to profit from sales and new markets. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other manufacturers' products in order to enhance its own range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and increased the firm's market share in the world.

In the 90s, Toto began focusing on research and development of water-related appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and boost profits. The company adopted a just-in-time approach to supply chain management and applied the same methodology for its sales process. This resulted in a higher degree of customer satisfaction.

Toto continued to develop toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a strong, eco-friendly tornado flush. Toto also makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. Toto also produces bathtubs, faucets, and hand dryers with higher energy efficiency than conventional models.

The first museum of the company was opened in the year 2015, and it has exhibitions on Toto's most iconic products and their evolution as well as its group companies (all related to ceramics), history of plumbing and products such as bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum also has the bathroom equipped with a washbasin and other toilet innovations.

Before forming Toto the band, members of the group did sessions for a variety of musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also appeared on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

It is common for a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock group however, it's actually a pretty straightforward rock group. The band began as four-piece, and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The band has a varied musical background, but their greatest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, but it was not without its problems. The record companies put the band under pressure to deliver the top single or else they would pull them. Toto was able achieve this feat with the help of the smash hit "Africa."

The album also has some slower, more jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song is a mix of folk and distortion AOR that could seem like a complete blunder, but works very well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band was through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It was not as popular as IV. However, the band still was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also sharper, more complex and less akin to previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album a few months later and then embarked on a world tour help promote it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.


In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without the single track "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and singer Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis infection that limited his singing abilities. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia The original Asia members met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. This lineup, minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
