How to Choose the Best Infant Cribs

The crib is an extremely essential piece of furniture for your baby's nursery. It isn't easy to select the ideal crib, due to so many designs and safety concerns.

Choose a crib that meets the highest safety standards and includes no chewable or dangling parts. We also recommend a stylish crib with a range of mattress heights and a sleek, modern design.

Safety

When assembling and setting up your baby's crib, be sure to follow safe sleep guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It is crucial to stay clear of putting anything in your baby's crib that could cause harm or injury such as blankets, pillows and sheepskins, toys for stuffed animals and bumper pads (see our complete guide to safe sleep for more information). Teddy bears, dolls, and stuffed animals larger than 15 inches should not be allowed to be placed in the crib of your baby. They could slide between the crib bars or be stuck in them. They may also be swallowed by the mattress.

The best cribs for babies are made from materials that are free of VOCs, harmful chemicals, and other substances. They also comply with strict federal and state regulations for structural safety. Additionally, they're third-party tested for safety and quality (think GREENGAURD gold or ASTM, JMPA, or CPSIA certifications!). They're designed to be durable and adaptable, so they can expand with your child.

If you're buying a new crib or used, it's important to select a crib that is in line with today's strict safety standards. Secondhand cribs may lose their structural integrity due to humidity, age and heavy use, posing grave dangers to your child.

The slats of your crib should not be more than 2-3/8 inches (6 centimeters) apart to keep infants from getting wedged between them and the hardware that is on the crib should be secure. Examine the slats, mattress support rims and the hardware for any loose or damaged components.

It's best to avoid cribs that were used by children or pets in the past, since their security could be at risk. Don't buy or accept a crib with drop-side rails. This feature was banned in 2012 by U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for safety reasons.

Style

Although all cribs must meet strict safety standards, there are numerous design variations. Some are simply aesthetic, such as whether the slats are all identical in length or are spaced closer than others or not, while others have a significant impact on the ease of the crib to operate and maintain. Some features like drop sides and finials aren't safe and should not be used. Other features, like the adjustable mattress heights and wheels, are desirable by many parents.

One thing to keep in mind is that a crib should be used only for infant sleep and is not an ideal place to store toys or clothes. It's also recommended to put the crib on your list so that friends and family can help you purchase one when the time arrives.

Cribs come in many different styles We prefer those that combine design and function. For instance, the Storkcraft Equinox 3-in-1 is minimalist and stylish. It's also GREENGUARD Gold certified, which we consider essential for any toxic-free baby product and can be converted into a toddler bed as well as a daybed (toddler conversion kit available separately).

Some cribs feature an older-style look like the DaVinci Jayden 4-in-1. It's a classy crib that is a good fit for big nursery spaces, but it takes up more floor space than smaller, minimalist alternatives and comes with exposed hardware that some may find distracting. Furthermore, it only has three levels of mattress height, which is less than half the alternatives and isn't as sturdy as our other choices.

The Babyletto Hudson is another option with a more modern look. The Babyletto Hudson's mesh all-around and hidden hardware help to improve airflow, and Dr. Casares believes that this is an attribute that many new parents will consider important. It can be raised to ease colic and reflux. This makes it suitable for babies who are 6 months and birth. It's also GREENGUARD GOLD certified and includes a free matching mattress. It's worth noting, however it's more expensive than our other top selections and requires a toddler bed conversion kit.

Adjustable Mattress Height

It is important that the mattress on your baby's crib is of the correct height. This ensures that your child isn't able to climb out, which could be dangerous or even fatal. A mattress that is higher will also protect your baby from overheating or suffocation.

A quality crib should have slats or railings that are adjustable to allow you to raise or lower the mattress as your infant grows. A conversion kit is provided in the majority of cribs, so that you can turn it into a daybed or toddler bed after your child has outgrown the crib. Finally, it's best to choose a crib that has been tested and inspected by a third party organisation for safety. The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association seal and GREENGUARD Gold Certification are two examples. These certifications ensure that the crib of your baby is free of finishes or chemicals.

The Graco Sweet2Sleep crib has an easy design and has no confusing parts. It is one of the top-rated cribs. The sides of the crib are smaller than other cribs, but one parent tester stated that her baby slept well in it and remained in good shape when she gave it to a relative after the birth of her second child was born.

Stokke Sleepi Crib is another great alternative. It has an oval shape, which gives it a contemporary look. It is a little more expensive than other cribs, however its durability and features make up for it. It can be easily transformed into an infant bed or a bassinet and has wheels to make it simple to move around. It also comes with a canopy that can be utilized to create a womb-like environment for your baby and adds an elegant look to any nursery.

The only downside to this crib is that it doesn't include a mattress, which you'll have to purchase separately. It's a secure, comfortable crib that will grow with your child as they go from newborn to toddler.

No Dangling or Chewable Components

The most secure cribs are free of chewable or dangling components. If pop over to these guys is hanging over or below the crib, it could cause the rails to pull or create a strangulation risk. Babies are very grabby. If parents decide to decorate their crib with decorative items or toys, they should make sure that the items are securely attached and are out of Baby's reach.

We also examine how easy it is to build our top infant cribs. The crib should be easy enough to put together yourself without the need for special tools or a large amount of time. Many parents report that the process of assembling a modern crib can take less than an hour, and the instructions included are generally clear and easy to follow.

It is crucial to choose a crib that will last many years. For long-lasting use, choose an adjustable crib that will work from infancy all the way up to a toddler bed and finally an adult-sized bed.

Our top pick for a 4-in-1 convertible crib is the Ikea Nestig Cloud Crib, that can be used to replace the bassinet in the early months, then convert to a toddler bed daybed, and full-size bed. It's designed to last for a long time and is available in a variety of colors that make it easy to match your nursery design theme.

Another excellent choice is the Stork Craft Equinox 3-in-1 crib. This gorgeous, minimalist-style crib is low-profile to ensure that petite parents can reach their child and comfort them. It also has a great reputation for quality and comes in cherry, white and espresso colors as well as natural pine colors.

This crib is Greenguard Gold Certified, which means it is made of sustainable New Zealand pine and is free of toxins like lead and phthalates. It also exceeds the standards of government agencies such as ASTM, CPSC and JPMA. The only thing missing is the toddler rail. You can buy it separately. This is a great option for those who are seeking a top-quality, affordable crib that will last.
