What Are Coffee Beans?

The coffee beans that you brew are actually seeds from the fruit called a coffee cherry. The coffee plant is perennial, meaning that it will grow every year.

Origin

The seeds of the coffee plant are used to make the coffee beverage that is brewed. Beans are a well-known and lucrative international commodity. The coffee plants are evergreen, woody plants that thrive in tropical climates. The majority of coffee in the world is grown in the Bean Belt, which includes those areas that lie between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.

The most famous legend about coffee's origin starts with a goat herder named Kaldi in Ethiopia. He observed that the bright red berries that came from certain coffee plants made his goats more energetic. Kaldi shared his findings with an abbot of a nearby monastery, who made drinks with the berries. The energizing effect of the berries were then spread to other places.

Currently coffee beans are made by two main varieties of Coffea plants: Arabica and Robusta. Robusta is mostly found in Africa and Indonesia and is generally more affordable than arabica. In addition to the primary varieties, there are a variety of smaller specialty beans that are a mix of robusta and arabica. These beans are referred as Peaberries and have a more delicious taste than standard beans.

During roasting, beans can lose moisture, which could result in them becoming bitter or stale. To avoid this, it is crucial to use only fresh, high-quality beans for your coffee.

Flavor

The four components of flavor- acidity, bitterness, sweetness, and saltiness -- are influenced by the bean type, climate, and the method of processing. The level of these elements can produce a variety of flavor profiles, ranging from sweet and fruity to nutty, or even smoky.

When coffee beans are heated they react with the amino acids present in their seeds, forming hundreds of unique aromatic compounds which alter the taste of the beans. This reaction is known as the Maillard Reaction, and it occurs in nearly every cooking. The result is that the smell of roasted coffee reflects those chemical compounds.

The Maillard Reaction is responsible for the overall flavor, but volatile and nonvolatile components also contribute to the flavor of coffee. The taste of a fresh or unroasted bean may be earthy, fruity, floral or chocolatey. Bitterness is typically associated with full-bodied roasts that contain more caffeine, but it can also be due to poor brewing methods or storage.

Flavored coffee beans have flavor oils on them which help preserve the beans as well as give them a distinct flavor and aroma. These flavored oils can be composed of chemicals as well as natural flavors, including vanilla, cinnamon and chocolate. The flavors bond to beans with the help of a chemical compound that is called polyphenol.

Health Benefits


Coffee beans are a fantastic source of magnesium, potassium and B vitamins. They are also a good source of antioxidants that prevent the oxidative stresses (which can cause chronic diseases like atherosclerosis and cancer). The antioxidant chlorogenic acids in coffee beans are particularly effective against obesity-related ailments, such as diabetes or high cholesterol levels.

Coffee is also a natural energy booster that helps people feel more energetic and alert. Caffeine stimulates neurochemicals that improves alertness, memory and cognitive performance. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels. Research has shown that moderate consumption of coffee can reduce the risk of developing Parkinson's disease and dementia, as well as increase happiness, mood, energy and concentration.

Anti-aging: The antioxidants found in coffee (including chlorogenic acids and caffeine) are natural moisturizers for skin which increases cell turnover and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. They also provide UV-protection which block light and prevent sun damage to skin.

Anti-depressant - Coffee beans are a natural anti-depressant. They boost serotonin levels and dopamine levels in the brain, thereby increasing the levels of happy hormones. It also eases pain and inflammation, acting as a natural analgesic while improving the effectiveness of pain killers. Coffee also contains cafestol and kahweol, two diterpene esters with lipolytic properties within the adipose tissues, aiding in the fight against cellulite.

Caffeine

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks around the world and has become an integral part of the routine of many mornings. Coffee beans are actually seeds of a plant known as the coffee plant or coffee cherry, and they are a natural stimulant caffeine. The amount of caffeine in coffee can differ based on how the bean is roast, brewed and served. But, there are basic rules about the amount of caffeine found in every coffee bean that will help you make smart decisions when choosing your joe.

The average coffee bean has approximately 2 milligrams of caffeine per bean, however the exact amount will vary dependent on the size of the bean and how darkly roasted it is. There is dark roast coffee beans that coffee beans with darker roasts contain more caffeine than lighter roasted ones. This isn't the case. Dark roast coffee beans have less caffeine than light roasts due to their lower density. However, the amount of caffeine is the same.

A typical cup of coffee has around 95 milligrams (mg) of caffeine in it, but the recommended daily limit is 400 milligrams. If you're not sensitive to caffeine staying within this range should not have any negative consequences. If you're not sensitive to caffeine can enjoy their coffee, however it's crucial to be aware of the amount caffeine you're taking in and to avoid excessive consumption.
