A bargain-priced robot vacuum is a great deal. However, be aware that it could cost more than you expected in maintenance: detangling hair from brushes, clogging inlets and emptying tiny dust bins can quickly make your dream of automated cleaning to be a chore.

The iRobot J7 Combo is the best value robot for a variety of users. It offers a similar hands-free experience, but at only a fraction of the cost.

Suction Power

Some models that are priced at this level have strong enough suction for basic vacuuming, but others might require help by a handheld nozzle to reach into the smallest cracks and crevices. If you live in a home with mostly hard floors and a low-cost robot vacuum is likely to suffice. If you have a variety of floors, rugs or pets who shed, you'll be able to get the best results with a more capable robot vacuum.

Some budget models come with a water tank and mopping capability, further increasing their versatility. The newer Dyson R7050C, for example, has very good navigation scores in CR's tests and a generous 770ml bin, but it is louder than many of the other robots we've tried and doesn't offer mopping features. Eufy Roborock Q5 Pro is smaller, but it is quieter and has an automatic dock. It also has water tank, powerful suction power of 5,500pascals and a large container that you can fill with cleaning solution to make it an effective mopping machine. The Q5 Pro can be controlled through the app's smart function, which lets you mop or vacuum a space or a sequence of rooms or an entire space. vacuum deals can also set up no-go zones, and customise suction settings for each room.

The budget Shark ION is a great option for those who want something basic, affordable and reliable. It's not as advanced as some of the other models we test, with a no-frills application and basic mapping capabilities, but it does have excellent navigation and cleaning capabilities. It's also one of the few robots we've tested which can differentiate between hard flooring and carpets and has a 300ml trash bin that has to be cleaned every 30 days.

Look into some of the best models that are priced at this level if you want something more sophisticated that can vacuum mop, sweep, and create maps to help you avoid obstacles. The iRobot Roomba 650 and 750 offer a powerful suction force, clever combs for pet hair and other dirt, and an in-app scheduling and voice control using your smart home assistant. Samsung Cleanbot SV8000 offers a outstanding cleaning capabilities at a reasonable price.

Navigation Efficiency

A budget robot vacuum can be just as effective as the more expensive models, provided that it can navigate your home and avoid obstacles. Our lab technicians utilized a tracking device in a multi-room test house to evaluate the robot's ability to navigate and locate the rooms it needed to clean within a specified time frame, while keeping away from obstacles like furniture, power cords and rug. We also evaluate how fast a robot can move through different terrains of a house, including the floor and stairways.

The most affordable robot vacuums feature efficient navigation systems that help them clean a room without spending time, crashing into obstacles, or getting stuck. Many models have mapping capabilities, which are vital to complete house cleaning. Even low-cost models with no mapping can effectively cover a room. It is crucial to weigh the cost of your machine with the features you require.

We also consider the ease with which robots can traverse thresholds within the home, like the heights of a door's sill or a sofa. A good budget-friendly robot must be able to pass over these obstacles, and some have settings that can alter suction power to suit different floor types. Finally, we look at whether a budget-friendly robot is compatible with your home's smart-home configuration and can be controlled remotely via an app or voice command.

The iLife V3s Pro does not have the advanced object-avoidance technology you find on many premium robots. However it does have live cameras that send an unreliable feed to your phone so you can watch it work. The cameras can detect stairs and other obstructions and alert the robot if it comes across them. However, the iLife employs random navigation instead of an approach designed to avoid objects stuck against furniture legs, so it may not be able around a leg on a chair or other tight spot as well as a robot equipped with mapping capabilities.

Cleaning Performance

When shopping for a robotic vacuum, you must consider the cost and performance. There are models that aren't as expensive and don't have advanced features like mapping however, you can find models that are very effective in cleaning your home. Pay attention to the size and capacity of the dust bin. It should be able to accommodate all the waste that robots accumulate, including hair, dirt, and pet dander.

The majority of budget models are effective in cleaning up spills on plain floors and in low-pile carpet however, they struggle to remove larger pieces of debris and pet hair from carpets with higher pile. They typically have less powerful suction than more expensive models however, they still do a a good job of cleaning up debris from tight spaces like corners and underneath furniture.

It also comes with a side-brush that has three bristles that push debris and hair into the robot's path, but it doesn't do as good as it does in picking up fine dust.

Choose a model that includes both vacuum and mop functions, like the Combo j9 Plus. It can simultaneously vacuum and mop, and define specific vac/mop setting for each room. It's more expensive than other low-cost robots in our list, but it has the advantages of a forward-facing camera, which allows for more precise mapping and better protection against obstacles such as power cords and cat Poop.
