Replacement Handles For Windows

Double glazed windows are a popular feature. Over time they can be worn down or rusty.

You'll have to know your current handle's spindle length and its fixings to replace it. This can be accomplished by examining the base of the old handle.

Handle

Over time uPVC handles and window locks may be damaged due to wear and tear, or accidental or deliberate damage. It is possible that the lock or handle becomes difficult to open or close or not even locked. It may be tempting to replace the entire window unit if this occurs, but it's not always required. In many instances, a new handle or lock is all that's needed.

The most common type of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette style. It has a spindle that extends from the handle and slot into a gearbox that operates the multipoint locking mechanism within the window. We have a range of locks and handles for all kinds of uPVC window to ensure they function properly.

When replacing a uPVC window handle it is a good idea to use screw cap caps to cover the screws to secure the screws and prevent them from rust. You can also employ a washer, spacer or another sealant to make a more secure fit. A screw cap will prevent debris and water from getting into the handle, causing damage.

After the handle is removed from the window it's a good idea to clean the spindle of the new handle, and also the threaded part of the bolt. This will ensure that the new handle fits and works properly, and it will also help to prevent any dirt from entering the multipoint lock.

The next step is to install the new uPVC handle. Be sure to go through the directions that come with the new handle and look at your previous one to get a better understanding of how to go about it. It's also important to note that if you're replacing a uPVC handle with a cockspur (also known as an Espag handle) you'll need to check the step height of the window in order to determine the proper size of handle. The steps height is the distance between the bottom of the window and the location where the cockspur handles sits.

Hinges

If your windows are beginning to open and close with a visible gap, this could be due to the hinges not aligned with the frame. This is usually a simple fix and can be solved by installing a new set of replacement window hinges. We have a variety of options and customise the size of the hinges to fit your requirements.

The sound of a hinge squeaking could be a sign that the hinges need to be replaced. It is usually caused by metal rubbing against metal. If the noise continues an ounce of lubricant will help.

Window plumbs help avoid unnecessary binding, which means that the operating sash of the window is in line with the frame, ensuring that it can be closed and opened properly. A window that is not plumb could begin to close and open with difficulty or may get warped over time, creating problems for the seal and appearance of the window.

You can buy replacement hinges for windows made of upvc in imperial or metric sizes. In general the metric sizes are a little more precise, but this isn't really evident once they are installed. The first corner holes on the track are standard, but the other holes can vary depending on the hardware that was originally used. You should measure the holes in your frame to make sure that the upvc hinges you buy are the right dimensions.


Crank

The normal wear and tear that happens over time can cause damage to the window handle, lock or crank mechanism. This can affect the ease of opening and closing your windows, and also compromise their security. If your window is difficult to open or close, or if you hear a clicking sound when turning the handle it could be a sign you need to replace the mechanism. If you're unable to lock your window, or the multipoint lock is damaged it might be worthwhile to consider replacing this part of the hardware as well.

It's easy to replace a window crank with minimal effort. However, it is essential to buy the correct size replacement. Make sure the replacement has the same step height as your old one, which can be determined by measuring the distance between the crank arm guide bushing and the notch that runs along the track that runs across the bottom of the window frame. Alternately, you can take a measurement of the length of the spindle on your current handle to find out what size you require for a replacement.

The type of handle you choose for your window will determine the kind of crank mechanism you need for your casement and windows with awnings. Espag handles are equipped with a spindle that is a mental component on the back that is attached to the frame of the window, and is the motor for the window mechanism while cockspur handle have pegs that are fixed in place by screws of three or four which are fitted into the sash and frame.

It's easy to replace the window operator once you've found the appropriate replacement. Compare the new operating lever to the old one, and then remove any rusted trim screw.
