French-door refrigerators are a perfect blend of form and function. They have stylish double doors that show the large fridge on top and a freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out because of their special features, including door-to-door dispensers and more expensive ice makers.

We consulted Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect and the founder of LS Projects - for her advice on how to choose the right home. We looked at the capacity of storage, layout, and energy efficiency among other features.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name of the series suggests that the GE Profile series is targeted at consumers who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchens. This fridge is loaded with these, from an inside-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a clever water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. The refrigerator is expensive and I expected more.

Aside from that blip, this fridge is a great choice. It has a large freezer compartment, which is unusual for counter-depth French-door refrigerators. It also has a large capacity for frozen food, which is a big difference from other models.

The fridge has 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment offers 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is roughly on the same as an French door refrigerator that costs this much. It also has an adequate-sized icemaker in the left door, but it's not the largest I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in each compartment to create a custom storage setup for the items you need to keep. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is also attractive. The LED lighting is an attractive accent. The bins for storage inside come with a third shelf that can be folded down to store tall objects. The drawers have temperature controls that allow you to set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. The drawers are easy to shut and open however I found the plastic's textured coatings to be a bit rough on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes the complete set of features you'd expect from a refrigerator at this price, including Wi-Fi and app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app is available for iOS and Android devices and allows you to manage your refrigerator from anywhere across the globe. It also offers a lot of customization options. It also gives you notifications when doors are left open, when the fridge or freezer needs defrosting and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS came with Precise Fill, an option available in other GE fridges that allows you to preset how many cups of water you'd like to pour out simultaneously. The fridge displays a countdown timer to reveal how much water remains, but it's not as effective as Precise Fill.


Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Designed to look like a seamless part of your kitchen, Bosch's French-door refrigerator is an eye-catching piece. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment to keep vegetables and fruits fresher longer, and two compressors for the best preservation of food. The Ice maker is among the most efficient we've ever tested and produces a pyramid-shaped ice that is low in water usage. This refrigerator is a great option for households with a single member or kitchenettes looking for an integrated look and top-of-the-line food preservation.

This refrigerator was rated as the best in our Refrigerators Test for a variety of reasons. The freezer temperatures remained steady at a level that was just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, never changing by more than a fraction one degree. This is crucial in preventing freezer burn. The fridge's fridge section also performed well, achieving the desired initial set temperature within an hour and maintaining the temperature constant over the course of our testing.

Bosch is a household name for its top-quality appliances. They have sunken handles at the front, which allows shorter people to easily pull them open from the bottom, but they're difficult for taller people to steer closed without slamming the doors. It would have been better if they came with a front-mounted handle.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a excellent option for those looking to combine the advantages of a French-door fridge's aesthetics with an efficient layout. Its capacity is above average for counter-depth models and is able to cool evenly. It's also a bit cheaper than the top counter depth refrigerator that comes with an icemaker, which makes it an attractive option.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a great choice if you want a French-door fridge that doesn't break the budget. It's a basic refrigerator that might not be as attractive as its rivals however it has enough features to make a good option. The "Chill Drawer", which sits over the two crisper bins, is another great feature. You can adjust this feature by using a slider that's located right on the outside of the drawer. You can also alter the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the general settings work better than the specific ones.

During my experiments, I noticed that the temperatures in the refrigerator were fairly consistent in different areas of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the fridge didn't differ much from 38 degrees. This is a pretty good performance, but it doesn't quite make it into the top ten in our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be paired with a smart thermostat to obtain more precise readings of the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made from gray-bodied stainless with a "smudge proof" finish. It wards off streaks and fingerprints better than other stainless steel finishes I've seen.
