How to Get a Driving Licence - Category A1

You can drive motorcycles with up to 125 ccm and power of 11 kW with an A1 license if you have completed instruction at a continuing driving school. You can also drive trikes and other motor vehicles that have three-drive.

You can obtain an A1 driver's license from the age of 16. You will need to take an exam in theory and a practical test.

What can I drive?

With an A1 license, you can drive two or three-wheeled mopeds. They can be equipped with an engine capacity of that can reach 125cc, with the maximum power output of 11 kW. A motor tricycle can be driven using this license, provided it has the power output of not more than 15kW. This licence also permits you to drive a moped while towing a trailer.

If you want to ride an even more powerful motorbike, you'll require a category AM licence. This permits mopeds with a capacity of cylinders up to 125cc, and with a power output of no more than 35kW.

Drivers who have a category C licence (which is obtained by passing the four-part CPC test) are able to drive large goods vehicles that have the maximum allowed mass of up to 3,500kg. This is much heavier than the majority of cars and that means you'll need to be capable of towing quite some distance.

Category C1 is less restrictive than category C, in that you can tow a trailer up to 500kg behind a vehicle with this licence. This is a good method to gain experience driving larger vehicles prior to taking on the full category C test which is required for all who wants to drive HGVs.

Anyone who has been driving in the less powerful categories A or A1 will find that it is much easier to pass a test for category A2, which allows the use of motorbikes with up to 35kW. This is known as 'grandfathering', and it was created to encourage people to get experience with smaller vehicles prior to attempting to drive larger ones. If you have two years' experience driving category A1 motorcycles, you can bypass the theory and practice test and only take a skills evaluation. This will be administered by a recognised training organisation. It should be a reputable school with instructors competent to instruct you on how to drive safely and safely. The driving lessons are designed to familiarise you with the vehicle that you will be learning to drive and also teach you about traffic laws.

Age restrictions

Before you can be granted a license to drive you must pass a written test. There are a variety of methods to prepare for this including attending a training session at driving schools or self-learning courses.

If you're ready to go, you can take the theory test consisting of 50 multiple-choice problems. To pass you must get at least 42 points. If you are under 16, you must have an adult accompany you when you take the theory test.

You will receive a driver's permit that is valid for two years If you pass the theory test. You must carry the permit with you at all times when driving in a vehicle. You can apply for a driving licence at the age of 17.

You must have had a category B driver's license for at least two years before you can be eligible to apply for the next class. You can only apply for a category A1 licence if, for example, you have driven a motorcycle with a category A2 or greater for at least two years.

After you have earned your A1 driving license, you can add the category of driving other types of vehicles, such as a tractor or an automobile. In most cases, you do not need to retake the theory or practical tests to add categories. It is important to check the laws of your country for more information.

Theory test

The theory test is an important component of getting your category A1 license. You can take the test before or after you have completed your compulsory basic training (CBT). You need to be able to pass both parts of the test in order to get your motorcycle licence.

You can practice online for the test. You can also take motorbike lessons with an instructor to prepare for the test. This will help you develop the fundamental skills required to pass the test and will reduce your risk of failing. A1 drivers can drive vehicles with up to 8,250kg in mass. You can also drive a vehicle and trailer combination that weighs up to 750kg. Before January 19, 2013, an entire category B license was required to operate mopeds and tricycles. However drivers who had a full category B licence before this date can still use their category AM moped and tricycle rights in the event that they do not have a full category C licence since then.
