Gordon Allport, a psychologist, was the first person to recognize personality as a scientific concept. He based his classification on 18,000 words from Webster's dictionary Later studies streamlined these characteristics into the Big Five personality dimensions that are currently utilized by psychologists.

Another method of understanding personality is by studying the concept of moderation. Moderation is a process that develops over time, and happens when predictors, hypothesized mediators, and outcomes are measured simultaneously. This kind of test is useful for assessing trait processes but doesn't take into consideration the effects of a particular situation.

Some people are born with certain temperaments in addition to their personality characteristics.
