How to Choose the Best Infant Cribs

A crib is among the most important pieces for your baby's nursery. It isn't easy to pick the right crib, with numerous styles and safety concerns.

Look for a crib that has the most stringent safety standards, including no dangling or chewable parts. We also recommend a sleek crib with a variety of mattress sizes and modern, sleek design.

Safety

Follow the safe sleeping guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics when setting up and arranging your child's crib. Avoid placing any items that could cause injury or harm to your baby's nursery. This includes blankets, pillows, and sheepskins. Also avoid bumper pads, stuffed toys and blankets. Teddy bears, dolls and other stuffed animals that are larger than 15 inches shouldn't be allowed to be placed in the crib of your baby. They could easily fall into or get stuck between your baby and the crib bars, or they could be swallowed by the mattress.

The best infant cribs are made of safe materials that are free from VOCs and other toxic chemicals. They also meet strict federal and state regulations regarding structural safety. Furthermore, they're tested by a third-party for quality and safety (think GREENGAURD gold or ASTM, JMPA, or CPSIA certifications!). They're designed to be sustainable and flexible, allowing them to expand with your child.

It's important that you choose a crib which meets the current safety standards, no matter if you're buying a brand new or used crib. Secondhand cribs may lose structural integrity over time due to humidity, age and heavy use. This could create serious risks for your baby.

The slats of your crib should be no more than 2-3/8 inches (6 centimeters) apart to prevent babies from getting trapped between them, and the hardware on the crib must be secured. It's an excellent idea to examine the mattress support rims and slats for broken or loose parts.

It is also advisable to stay clear of cribs that have been used by children or pets, as their safety may be at risk. Don't buy or accept a crib with drop-side rails. This feature was banned in 2012 by U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to protect the public.

Style

There are a lot of variations in the design of cribs, despite the fact that they all have to meet safety standards. Some are just cosmetic, like whether the slats are all the same length or are spaced further than others, and some can affect how easy it is to use and clean the crib. Certain features, such as finials and drop sides aren't safe and should be avoided, while others--like adjustable mattress heights and wheels/casters are popular with parents.

One thing to be aware of is that a crib should be used solely for sleep for infants, so it's not an ideal place to store toys or clothing. You can also put a crib on your registry to get help from friends and family when you need one.

Adjustable Mattress Height

When your baby is sleeping in their crib, it is important that the mattress is at the right height. This will prevent your child from escaping the crib, which can be fatal or dangerous. A higher mattress can also protect your child from overheating or suffocation.

A quality crib should have slats or railings that are adjustable that allow you to raise or lower the mattress as your child grows. The majority of cribs include a conversion kit that allows you can convert the crib into the toddler bed or daybed after your baby outgrows it. Stokke Sleepi Crib is another fantastic alternative. It features an oval shape, which gives it a contemporary look. The safest cribs do not have chewable or dangling parts. If something is hung over or below the crib, this could cause the rails to be pulled or cause strangulation. Babies are very grabby. If parents decide to decorate their crib with decorative items or toys, they should ensure that the items are securely fastened and are not within Baby's reach.
