Types of Hob and Oven

A oven and hob is an essential part of many kitchens and can come in a variety of styles. You can even mix types like domino, electric and gas to meet your cooking needs.

Safety features like child and position controls can be included in the hob. These features will prevent children from accidentally altering the heat setting or touching the hob.

Types

The hob is the central element of any kitchen and has a huge impact on the outcome of your cooking. However, there are a variety of kinds of hobs, and the one you choose will depend on what your specific cooking requirements are.

Gas hobs provide a classic option. They are quick to heat up and respond immediately to temperature changes. Professional chefs favor them because they are precise in their control. However, they're not as clean as other hobs and could require a higher degree of maintenance.

Electric hobs are made of ceramic with a flat surface and heated elements underneath. They are available in different sizes and with up to six cooking zones. Each zone includes its own heating element, which can be controlled by you. It is possible to boil potatoes in one ring, while cooking sausages on a different. This kind of hob is quicker to heat up than gas, and is the safety of children since the cooking area becomes hot only when you put an oven on it.

Ceramic hobs are a fashionable and user-friendly alternative to electric and gas hobs. They have a smooth, durable surface that is easy to wipe down but aren't as fast at responding to temperature changes as other hobs and are slower to cool down.

Domino hobs are an alternative to electric and gas hobs that have ovens underneath the cooking surface. They are ideal for kitchens with little space. They also work well in kitchenettes and flats. They are usually less expensive than standard hobs and can be energy efficient, but they are also susceptible to damage and require greater maintenance.

Gas

A gas hob is a cooking surface with burners that can be installed on kitchen countertops to give seamless appearance. They are usually powered by natural or liquid petroleum gas (LPG) however they can be powered by propane gas. They are modern and sleek design that can add a touch of sophistication to your modular kitchen.

A traditional gas stove is fitted with a number of burners. There are usually four burners, but it could be up to six. The flames are ignited using an igniter or by turning a knob. The flames are controlled by a series of valves that can be adjusted to set the temperature.

Most modern built-in gas stoves on the other hand are equipped with burners that have multiple flames. This lets you control both the inner and outer ring for each burner so that you can precisely control your cooking. These kinds of burners offer quicker heat up times and are more reliable than the older models.

Traditionally, it was necessary to keep a gas stove lit continuously to ensure the burners were constantly fueled and hot. This was to avoid accidents, such as the mistake of turning on an oven while the stove is still lit with the help of a match or a pilot light. Modern cookers are designed with safety in mind and include a built-in flame safety device that shuts off the burners automatically should the pilot light fail.

Gas stoves and hobs have to be regularly checked, cleaned and maintained. To achieve this, it is recommended to make an appointment with a Gas Safe registered engineer. They will not only be able to ensure that your appliance is working correctly and safely, but they will also offer expert advice and guidance on how to avoid problems in the future.

Electric

A well-designed hob is just as important in creating the perfect kitchen. Worktops, refrigerators, freezers and ovens are always the first things that come to your mind. The type of hob that you select will impact the way your kitchen operates and how easy it is for you to clean it.

Electric hobs are equipped with heating elements that are placed on a smooth, glass surface. The glass surface is typically cleaned using a nonabrasive cleaner. The elements turn on when you turn the hob on and can be adjusted to a range of power levels by turning or clicking a control knob. They can take a little longer to warm up than a gas cooker but once they do they are able to provide better, consistent temperature control. They also come with indicators to let you know when a space is being used or hot from cooking.

Typically, these come in four to six different sizes that can be cranked up to various levels of power. They are ideal for cookware with a flat base however they aren't the ideal option for cast iron pans as they can overheat. Some models (such as Belling BELCH602T) come with dual rings that let you cook sausages and boil water on the same ring. Some models have a 'boost' function that concentrates the power of high-powered heat into a single ring for stir fry cooking, searing meat or boiling large pots of water.

Induction hobs differ from standard electric models as they use electromagnetic fields to directly heat your cookware rather than the conventional method of gas flames. They can reach precise temperatures faster and are more efficient in energy use. They feature a cool to the touch surface, and flashing indicators that inform you whether a ring was used or is still hot.

best hobs is an ingredient that can be used to create useful or decorative objects. It's formed by mixing earthen elements, clay powders and water into a specific shape, then subsequently fired in a high-temperature oven known as the Kiln. Once it's been made it can be decorated or covered with decorative materials to add texture and colour.

Ceramic hobs are a stunning blend of function and form and can be found in any modern kitchen. They work by using radiant heating technology that passes an electric current through the coiled elements hidden beneath the black glass surface of the hob. These generate heat when activated, which is then transferred to the pan through an infrared system. You can adjust the level of heating by using the knobs or touch controls.

Some ceramic hobs are dual ring designs that have one smaller and a larger cooking zone that lets you select the best size for your pan. There are hobs equipped with booster burners that produce high-powered heat quickly, great for searing meat or bringing pans of boiling water to a boil quickly.

Ceramic cooktops are more energy efficient than other kinds of hobs because they take longer to heat up and switch temperatures. You can also choose vented hobs that incorporate an air-conditioning system that is integrated into the ceramic cooktop. This makes sure that smoke, steam and cooking smells do not linger in your house.

Induction

Induction hobs are equipped with heating elements composed of copper wire coils. These coils generate electromagnets which warm the pans that are placed on the top. The coils stir up free electrons within the base metal of your pan, which then transfers heat evenly to your food. The surface of the hob never gets hot and, the moment you remove your pan the cooking zones are turned off automatically.

Induction hobs are generally more expensive, but they also heat up faster and use 30-70% lower energy than gas or other kinds. They're also easier to clean, since the surface of the hob doesn't get hot and only the contents of your pan do.

Some manufacturers offer an induction model with additional features, for instance the pause feature that shuts off power to the stove when you walk away, or the ability to link two cooking rings simultaneously with the same power to provide increased flexibility. They are often referred to as FlexInduction hobs. They are more expensive than traditional induction models but they're worth a look when multitasking is important to you.

This induction hob is our top choice. It comes with four large cooking zones as well as a Bridge function and nine power settings, offering you plenty of options for those who are ambitious cooks. In our tests, it performed well with accurate control and fast heating when making pancakes. The cooker also comes with a built-in dishwasher and an automatic pan detection function to make cleaning easier. There's a small selection of pans that are compatible, and it can't be used for cooking with appliances that have a magnetic base. This can be a problem when you have a large quantity of cookware that is not compatible, or only a small portion of it is compatible with induction hobs.
