Choosing an Electric Pyramid Patio Heater

For outdoor spaces that need warmth and ambience patio heaters are a good choice. Think about the output of heat from the heater and how warm you'd like your space to feel.

Electric models are lightweight and safe to use in enclosed spaces, like garages or patios. They require a corded source of power and aren't quite as powerful as propane models.

Safety Features

While patio heaters can add a nice cozy element to outdoor spaces, it's crucial to keep safety in mind. Natural-gas and propane-powered models emit harmful chemicals as well as carbon monoxide, so they should be placed in a space that is well ventilated as per the manufacturer's guidelines. Electric heaters emit no pollutant and can be used in restricted spaces.

Select a model with solid bases to prevent tipping. Some manufacturers include a tilt switch that shuts off the heater when the unit is tilted over the specified amount. This decreases the chance of injury or fire to anyone around, particularly when you're sipping a cocktail and having a chat with your friends.

The GH Institute tested models that were easy to use and set up. The Member's Mark patio heater required only one person to set it up and has a convenient set of wheels at the base for convenient transportation. We also loved that this model came with an easy-to-read control panel that was simple to move around the deck. It also comes with a great amount of heat, up to 10 feet in a circle. And it comes with a propane tank.

The size of the space you want to heat is another important aspect. It may be necessary to use a larger heater to heat a larger area. Many manufacturers list their heating capacity in British thermal units (Btu) and the greater the Btu rating, the greater the heating capacity.

It is also possible to determine whether a specific model is safe for use on a wood deck. The majority of patio heaters that are freestanding can be used safely on decks of all types, but it's always a good idea to check the instruction manual and follow any specific precautions that may be required.

If you're thinking of purchasing an electric patio heater pyramid, stay clear of the ones with cords that traverse walkways. These cords could cause tripping hazards for people who aren't paying attention, and also increase the chance of accidental contact with heating elements that are hot.

Heat Output

The energy output of the patio heater is measured in British thermal units (Btu). A higher Btu rating means that the heater is able to provide more heat to a larger area. A 40,000-btu model can comfortably heat up around 2,000 square feet, which is enough space for several people to sit and relax. Larger rooms and colder climates require an even higher Btu rating to ensure everyone is comfortable.

Electric patio heaters plug into an electrical outlet, and they produce infrared warmth that warms objects and people. They do not release harmful pollutants. Gas-powered patio heaters, on the contrary, emit carbon monoxide as well in other harmful chemicals. They are therefore not suitable for use in enclosed spaces that don't have adequate ventilation. Due to this, they are best used in well-ventilated spaces. They should not be used for homes that have pets or children.

Patio heaters that are powered by natural gas or propane usually generate more heat, however they are more expensive. They are also heavier and more difficult to move than electric models which makes them less mobile. If you are concerned about the safety of your patio heater, purchase one with an anti-tip feature that will stop it from tipping over.

This is especially true with freestanding models, and a few of the most effective ones are able to fold up and take indoors for storage when it's not being used. If you're looking to warm a larger space we recommend the heater with higher Btu.

It's also important to think about whether you'd like your patio heater to be powered by electricity or propane because each offers its own advantages. Propane patio heaters are usually more efficient than electric models and require less maintenance. However, they should be kept in a ventilated space at all times which can make them less practical for certain homeowners.

Aesthetics

Unlike a freestanding infrared heater that uses heat radiation to warm the air, dome and pyramid patio heaters run on propane and emit a flame to create a warm fire effect. These heaters are usually triangular in shape with a central column that has flames that run along the middle. They provide the most coverage. They have a lower output of heat than infrared heaters, however, they offer enough warmth to keep diners comfortable while dining outdoors.

Most of the outdoor heaters we tested came in boxes and required assembly prior to using. The difficulty of assembly varied. Some, like the Dura Heat Tank Top, were extremely easy to put together however, others took hours to put together, like the Member's Mark pyramid heater, which was the most difficult to assemble of all the models we tried.

Because these units are built to be outdoor, they must endure some severe weather conditions, and their durability is an important factor to consider. Those made with sturdy materials, such as the stainless steel on the Member's Mark model, are better equipped to withstand snow and rain than those that utilize glass tubing at the center of the unit, which could easily crack or break. This particular model comes with an extra-secure cover that can be helpful during windy weather.
