While robot vacuums are excellent in keeping your floors clean, they can't replace a full-size vacuum. Even the best robots have difficulty getting deep into carpets and rugs and they can get tangled up in cords and socks.

Your robot will last longer if it is maintained with regular maintenance. This includes replacing filters, removing hairs that are tangled from brushes, and emptying the dust bin.

Battery Life

Most robot vacuums are able to handle a couple of cleaning sessions without needing to be charged. The runner-up of our top picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Q30S Combo is that is designed to last for up to 180 minutes (3,230 square feet) of cleaning time on one charge. This amount of runtime will suffice for the majority of small homes with carpets, hard floors and low pile carpets or larger homes where the rooms are about the same size.

A longer battery lifespan also means the robot can spend more time cleaning and less charging on its dock. It's worth opting for models that have a self-emptying dust bin because they are more efficient in collecting debris and returning to the dock for charging. It's also important to empty or change the filter and clean cameras and sensors regularly so that they are able to see your home clearly.

Smart mapping technology is a great feature to look for since it permits you to program your robot to clear certain rooms or areas where it's more likely to crash into furniture or other obstacles. This feature is also beneficial for ensuring that your robot can reach under and around furniture like beds, sofas and other large objects. In our tests, a tracking device is used to track the robot through a multi-room lab. It then maps its surroundings. cleaning robots check the way it manages to avoid obstacles, including power cords, furniture legs and pet waste.

The top robots can map out multiple floors and can recognize landmarks like windows and doors. The most advanced ones, like the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra, feature a dual-sensor navigation system which uses an LIDAR sensor to map out the room, and a lighting camera in front of the robot to detect objects in real-time. This lets the S8 to stay clear of common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords and can also store up to four different floor maps in its internal memory.

The majority of the models that are affordable use bump sensors, which aren't as accurate. In my tests they were able to detect dog poop and cords, as well as a pair of shoes placed in the middle. The Dreametech D10+ is the most value-for-money option. It has excellent carpet and hard floor pickup, great hair and tangle pickup and an almost perfect auto empty score.

However, even the most advanced models require some interaction with their users - especially when it comes to scheduling cleanings and establishing a floor plan, and setting up virtual barriers.


To reduce the impact of this kind of interaction, look for a model that has its own app to identify the layout of your home and save those settings for future use. This will let the robot vacuum begin where it left off on subsequent runs, rather than having to start the mapping process each time.

It's important to look out for a vacuum that comes with zones or spot cleaning modes. You can instruct the vacuum cleaner to concentrate on a specific area, such as under the table after a huge family meal. It is possible to use the app or via voice commands.

Avoidance of objects is a different option that is available on many models. It allows the robot, when it sees something that is in its path, like a box of shoe or a crate with dog toys, to guide itself around. This will prevent it from hitting objects that could damage its sensors or cause jams.

Certain models can detect dirt levels to alter the level of cleaning. They can also detect items that aren't a part of your flooring in your home, such as furniture, toys and food bowls.

Some robot vacuums come with additional pet-friendly features. These include a water dispenser which is used to mop floors, and a HEPA filtering system that eliminates allergens like pet dust. They may also have an operation that is quieter to cut down on the amount of noise that is generated during cleaning.

Robot vacuums that have maps are a great option for pet owners since they're designed to evaluate your home and create a plan of attack according to the layout and obstructions in each room. Make sure you choose models with smart mapping capabilities. This lets them "learn the patterns of your house and design a more efficient route.

Some models also offer spot cleaning. This lets you choose a specific area of your home to be targeted for intensive cleaning. In our tests, we found that the top models can remove fine particles such as baking soda, sand orzo, metal screws, and pet hair, as well heavier debris like oatmeal orzo, and screws made of metal.

According to the manufacturer, robots can last years and continue to perform well, as long as they are properly maintained. For example cleaning hair tangled of brushes cleaning dust bins after each use as well as wiping cameras and sensors down as needed. The best-performing robots also tend to be more modular which makes them simpler and cheaper to repair or replace components like batteries and wheels when they wear out.
