How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Robot vacuums will save you time and effort when it comes to regular cleaning. The best models are capable of cleaning up dust, light debris and cords.

The more expensive ones will even sweep your floor however they're not able to climb up stairs. Look for models with smart mapping, real-time hazard avoidance, and spacious self-emptying bins.

The best robots we tried were efficient, easy-to-use, and able keep up with the daily debris. You'll also need a robot that can take on stairs and has good cleaning power for carpets. If you're looking for additional features, you might be interested in a model equipped with smart mapping technology or an application that allows you to control the robot remotely.

Camryn Rabideau, a contributing shopping writer at PEOPLE and a product reviewer who has tested numerous robotic vacuums, is acknowledged for her work in testing numerous robot vacuums. She's a fan of the robovacs that offer the most convenience, such as self-emptying dustbins and charging docks that automatically empty and fill the water tanks used by mopping robots. She's also a fan of the robots that can recognize landmarks such as furniture legs and power cords so they don't get tripped up when climbing steps.

In comparison to the top-rated models this Black and Decker robot vacuum isn't as advanced in its object-avoidance capabilities and its score for navigation is lower. However, it has an enormous dust bin that doesn't require frequent emptying, and has a long battery life. It also comes with a feature which allows you to schedule cleaning times and then return to the place it stopped at the last point, making it easier to take care of larger spaces. This model is a great choice for pet owners because it will prevent the tangles of fur and food particles.

In our tests we tested the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combines an LIDAR sensor that can map rooms and see obstacles with a structured light sensor to identify objects and detect edges. This combination lets it stay clear of stairs, drops of liquid, and furniture legs with ease and save up to four floor maps for future reference. It is able to pause and resume cleaning at any time, meaning that you can continue with your chores while it does. The app includes the 3D image of your home, with room labels as well as advanced cleaning options.

This model isn't as good at cleaning as our top models, however it excels at picking up heavier items like orzo pasta, metal screws, and fine particles such as sand. The only downside is that it can't mop and has a less impressive navigation system.

The best for Carpet

If you have carpeting, pick an automatic vacuum that scores high for carpet and rug ability to maneuver and pick up. Many models are good at collecting dust from low-pile carpets, and some do a decently job of cleaning up larger debris such as orzo pasta and screws made of steel. But they don't pick up small particles like an upright or canister vacuum and may also not pick up dirt that is ground-in close to baseboards and thresholds.

For homes with carpets, a 2-in-1 robot mop/vacuum is the best option. robotic vacuum cleaner can swap out a cleaning bin to a damp mopping mat. The Roborock Q Revo is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum/mop that can clean and mop simultaneously with circular pads spinning at 200 rpm. It detects and lifts its pads when it comes into contact with carpets, preventing the floor from becoming wet. You don't have remove them or replace them every time. The Q Revo is also more efficient than other robot vacuums and mops in the absence of obstacles and in being close to carpets and thresholds.

The iRobot Roomba Combo i5 is another good option. It did well in our tests and you can set it up to schedule it to tidy your home even when you're away. It can be set up to mop only. We loved its navigation on floors with no flooring and carpets. The Combo i5 has a long time to run and excellent path planning for an item of this size.

If you want a more high-tech model, consider the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Self-Empty Robot Vacuum & Mop. It has a huge charging dock that can go several weeks without having to be emptying and boasts amazing navigation capabilities and auto-emptying on both bare floors and carpets. It also has a smart mapping system that can be set to only run for certain hours (a useful feature for keeping the sly children and animals from running wild). The Shark has less powerful suction than other robot vacuum/mop combos, but its still very effective in removing hair and pet hair and is the best value among our top choices.

Best for Hard Flooring

Robot vacuums are a great option for hardwood floors since they are able to maneuver around obstacles and not damage surfaces that are not bare. They are great in removing dust and crumbs, but they struggle with pet hair or other debris. They lack the suction power of a top-of-the-line upright or canister vacuum, so they're not an ideal option for rooms with carpets or deep cleaning upholstery.

The best robots are two-in-one, combining a vacuum with a mop to do a complete job in one step. Look for models that have an onboard sensor that detects changes in the floor's texture and adjust suction in line with the changes. This feature is available on the ECOVACS Deebot T9+ and allows it to move seamlessly from hard carpeting to soft carpeting.

If you have lots of hardwood floors in your home, you may want to consider a robot mop and vacuum like the Eufy S1 Pro. This model uses a powerful robotic vacuum that has intelligent navigation to clean hardwood floors and other hard surfaces. Additionally, it has the ability to mop as well. The sensors help it avoid staircases and other hazards, so you don't have to be worried about the robot falling down the stairs and damaging your hardwood.

When you need mops, the Eufy S1 Pro is designed to actually wash hardwood floors with downward pressure, rather than wipe them clean to get rid of light dirt and dust. Its pads that can be reused reduce waste and help to spread less germs. They can also be cleaned in docking stations to reduce time. The mop pads can also be cleaned and dried to stop the spread of mold.

The robovac can be controlled via your smartphone, making it much easier to use. You can, for example make use of the app to create zones that the vacuum will not enter, or to label rooms, or schedule specific cleaning times. The eufy S1 Pro has an auto-emptying port that collects debris via a trapdoor, and stores it in a bag-less or disposable bin. This means that you won't have to empty the bin manually as often as you do with other models.

Best for Small Spaces

Like the name suggests that these robots are suited for small spaces. They have smaller bins that can hold less garbage, and are more efficient than the larger models when it comes to navigating tight corners. They can also fit under furniture, whereas larger robots struggle to get in. These robots are also cheaper than the more expensive models, but you'll have to empty their dirt bins manually at the end each cleaning session.

A couple of years ago, robotic vacuums went through a major change as manufacturers began adding sensors to help them navigate around and avoid household objects that their traditional sensors would become stuck on or over. These advances have reduced the number of times that our testers had to clean up after a robotic snag, whether it was an electrical cord, toy, or piece of pet waste.

The new sensors don't solve all the problems with these devices however. The cheapest models are still struggling with the same obstacles that the older ones did and most need a certain amount of light to be able see where they're headed. If you are living in a dark space or have a lot of furniture with low-profiles, consider buying a model that utilizes a top-mounted spinning LIDAR unit to map your space, as our top overall and runner-up choices do. This allows them to work in the dark and avoid obstacles like stairs.

They can also be programmed to only use their cliff sensors only when they are near or on the ground, but not when they are above it. It's important to cover mirrors in order to stop this from happening. The lasers used by LIDAR-based models may bounce off reflective surfaces, which makes the robot think it's in another room.

Some of the models we recommend allow you to create virtual no-go zones for areas you don't want the robot to visit. This is helpful if you have pets or small children. These features aren't offered on all of the models we test, so be sure to go through our complete reviews of the models below before making your purchase.
