How to Get a Driving Licence - Category A1

If you've attended an instructor in driving you are able to drive motorcycles with 125ccm engines and 11 kW of power when you have an A1 license. You can also drive three-drive motorized vehicles such as trikes.

You can get an A1 driver's license from the age of 16. You will need to take a theory test and the practical test.

What are the rules for driving?

With the category A1 licence, you can drive two or three-wheeled mopeds. These are vehicles that have engines of up to 125cc and a power output of up to 11kW. A motor tricycle can be driven using this license, provided that it has the power output of not more than 15kW. This licence also permits you to drive mopeds that have a trailer.

Drivers with a category C license (which they can get after passing the CPC four-part test) are allowed to drive large vehicles with 3,500kg maximum. This vehicle is heavier than the majority of cars and you will need to be able to tow a lot.

This category is less restrictive than Category C. You can tow a trailer of up to 750kg using this license. This is a handy way to get experience driving larger vehicles before taking on the full category C test, which is required for those looking to drive HGVs.

Anyone who gains experience in the less powerful categories A and A1 will find it much easier to pass the test for category A2, which permits the driving of light motorbikes with an output of up to 35kW.
