What is Evolution?

The modern understanding of evolution focuses on the gradual, cumulative changes that occur within populations over time. These changes are the result of natural selection. This is a process which increases the number organisms with beneficial traits, which allow them to survive and reproduce in specific environments. This means that these organisms leave more offspring than those who don't have these beneficial characteristics. This causes a genetic change that can eventually lead to the creation of new species.

The term "evolution" is often associated with the notion of "survival of the fittest," which implies that people who are the most adapted to a specific environment will be more successful than those who aren't well-adapted. In actuality, this is only one of many ways that evolution could occur.

Another popular way in which the term "evolution" is used to suggest that a species will inevitably change from one state to the next state of being. This type of view of evolution could be described as anagenetic, or cladogenesis. The definition of evolution that scientists have developed does not support this view. The theory of evolution that is based on science change focuses instead on the changes that occur in populations over time. These changes are the result of mutations which result in natural selection and genomic variation.

Some scientists, such as the great Charles Darwin, advocated this theory of evolution. Alfred Russel Wallace who developed the macroevolution theory believed this was only way the higher forms of living could have evolved.

For a concept to be considered a theory, it has to be capable of standing up to rigorous testing and evidence. The evidence of evolution has withstood the test of time and has been supported by countless studies in a wide range of scientific disciplines, from biology to geology, chemistry to astronomy. Evolution is a cornerstone of science and is backed by a majority of scientists across the world. However, many people have misconceptions about the theory of evolution, particularly how it is related to religion.

What is the Theory of Evolution (Evolutionary Theory)?

Evolution is an explanation in science of how living things change over time. It is based on a range of well-established and observable facts that show that more offspring are often created than are likely to survive; that individuals differ from one another in their physical characteristics (phenotype) and that various characteristics result in different rates of reproduction and survival and can be passed on to future generations. These findings are backed by a growing body of evidence drawn from molecular biology, palaeontology and climatology functional morphology geology.

Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace independently conceived the theory of evolution through selection in the mid-19th Century as an explanation why organisms adapt to their biological and physical environments. It is the most widely accepted and tested theory in science. Its predictions were proven by the evidence that, for instance, more complex organisms have fewer genetic mutations. In addition, the more successful an organism is at surviving and reproducing in its ability to reproduce, the more likely it will be to pass its genes to future generations.

Some people object to evolution based on the belief that it implies that there is no purpose to life. They also agree that evolution is a process that occurs over time, usually over millions of years. What is the Evidence of Evolution?

Another evidence comes from similarities among living organisms embryology, biogeography, genetics and comparative anatomy.

The evolutionary tree is the most effective way to prove evolution. It demonstrates how species are closely related. Another way to prove it is homologous structures, which have similar structure in different species but perform distinct functions like the wings of birds and bats. Evolution is evident in that different species adapt and develop to similar environments. For instance, arctic foxes and Ptarmigans wear white seasonal pelts that blend into the snow and ice. This is a kind of convergent evolution that suggests that the species has common ancestors.


Vestigial structures are a different piece of evidence. These are parts of an organism that may serve a function in the distant past. The human appendix, for instance, is a vestige from an organ that once used to digest food. Natural selection is a process that causes the structures to shrink when they are no longer used.

Scientists have also collected evidence for evolution through observation and experimenting. The evidence for evolution can be divided into six distinct categories: directly observed changes at a smaller scale, biogeographic distributions, comparative anatomy, the fossil record and genetics. Each of these provides compelling evidence that the evolution of life has taken place.

While many people are misinformed about the theory of evolution it is a scientific fact. It isn't simply a flimsy theory. It is a powerful collection of years of observation and accumulated data that has been tested and proven. No matter what people believe or disbelieve about the theory of evolution scientists continue to research and gather new information to better understand the history of life on Earth. This information will help scientists understand how to prevent future catastrophes on the planet and how to best use the resources of our planet. This information will also help us better serve the needs and desires of the people who live on this planet.
