Evolution Korea South Korea's democratic system is prone to populist tendencies. Nonetheless, it is healthier than might be expected. The country is searching for an innovative development paradigm. A Confucian culture that emphasizes respect for ancestors and gendered family relations continues influence the way we live. There are signs of a secularist cultural trend emerging. Origins In prehistoric times the ancestors of modern Koreans lived on hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet, beans, and other crops. They also raised livestock and created furs. They formed tribal states in Manchuria and later on the Korean peninsula. They also created an industry of metalworking, making bronze tools and later iron tools. They traded with other countries and introduced block printing to Japan along with styles of art, a written language, and paper making. Gojoseon was established in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. This state embraced Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture, including Confucian philosophy. At this time, the people of Buyeo were incorporated into Gojoseon. Gojoseon had a hierarchical structure with a monarch and senior officials were drawn from the landed aristocracy, while the rest of the population were peasants. The state extracted taxes from these citizens and often required them to join the army or work on government projects such as building fortifications. Onjo Prince Onjo, a prince from Goguryeo who was also the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo established the state of Baekje at the close of the time. This new kingdom expanded its territory into the southwest of the peninsula and fought with Goguryeo and China's commanderies in the region. Baekje took on Confucian ideas into its state belief system in 1390 CE, and introduced the male-centric concept of filiopiety a tenet. Under the guise of filiopiety fathers were responsible for their families and they must be respected and obeyed by all people, even their grandchildren and children. The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to cooperate to expand their territories. Silla, with the help of the Chinese eventually conquered and unified the peninsula in 935. There, there were enough students fascinated by the concept of creationism that they raised the money and support to put up a small museum on campus showing creationist models of fossils and other exhibits. The evolution of South Korea In the latter half of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional hanbok, or Korean dress, was replaced to miniskirts and other fashion elements imported from abroad. In the same way, traditional Korean music styles were replaced with modern jazz and rock and roll. In the period of this transition the samulnori, or masked dancing-dramas were very popular. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drummers and other instruments. Korea's new model of development is being formed in the aftermath of the economic crisis. The new regime's main challenge lies in the proper balance between state-led economic policies and market-oriented ones. It also involves changing the incentives, monitoring, and disciplining strategies that have shaped the system before the crisis. These issues are discussed in Chapters 3 and 4. Baekje was founded by Onjo, prince and third son of Jumong of Goguryeo, was founded by people from the Hangang River area, Buyeo, and other areas and also by a migrant from northern China. Baekje, a major regional power in the early 4th Century extended its territory to Mahan in north and Jeollanam-do south. The kingdom was in constant conflict with Goguryeo, and the Chinese commanders on the border. The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries resulted in the rise of powerful local factions. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as the capital. He controlled a part of the present-day Jeolla province as well as Chungcheong. Then, he moved the capital to Wansanju. He became a rival to Goguryeo. His rule was however only for a short time. After Gungye's defeat, he was overthrown by a powerful local leader Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935. Later, Baekje was incorporated peacefully into Goryeo as a successor state. Additionally, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a central ruling system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms Period. From that point on the Korean peninsula was controlled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla gradually grew into powerful states on the peninsula and in Manchuria.
