How to Choose the Best Cot For Newborns

The cot will be the baby's bed until attains the age of four. Therefore, you need it to be comfortable, sturdy and safe.

Make sure that it has gaps-free mattresses, because gaps can be the risk of suffocation for infants. Also consider an adjustable cot.

Single Cot

The OEX Ultralite foldable cot is one of the lightest options available. It weighs just 2.68kg, and costs almost one quarter less than the Helinox version I tried. It's also a lot easier to set up - the two main poles snap together, like unusually thick tent poles with shock cords to hold them in place. They then are able to slide into sleeves on the legs of their linked legs. You just have to put your feet into them to create the sleeping surface.

The only negative is that it can be a little tricky to dismantle and you'll need to be really strong to remove the legs and it requires some effort to remove the frame itself. However, that's not a major issue and it's the most lightweight cot I've tried.

Take a look at the cot bed options available on the market if looking for something more durable and long-lasting. They're generally suitable from birth until around 2 years, so you'll need one bed for your child at some point if you decide to go with this option.

Some children prefer to stay in a cot for more than this, however the majority of them are eager to transition to their first single bed - which could be presented as a 'prize for being the big brother or sister!

The Cot One provides a comfortable sleep for babies and young children on any surface, including hard surfaces. It's also easy to install, with no tiny parts that could get lost, and it feels safe enough to keep a toddler in place with no wobbly bits or parts to worry about.

Double Cot

A double cot will be ideal for twins or siblings who need to sleep together. It comes with the same security features of a single cot. It has side rails, a slatted bottom that can be adjusted to suit your child's growing needs. It also comes with multiple support areas, which means you can find the perfect fit for your child's unique needs. In addition, this is the only cot that we test that can accommodate multiple infants simultaneously and can accommodate two babies up to 325 pounds. and 72 inches long. This is a big selling point for families that require space with more than one child.

A great feature that many parents appreciate about this cot is that it can be converted into a toddler bed, and later into the junior bed, which gives it an extended lifespan and means that you won't need to purchase another new bed. This is great for those with limited funds and will save money as your child grows.

Cot beds are the most popular sleeping option of most health experts since they provide the best safety for your baby. The bed is intended to be used until your child reaches the age of 2 years. After that, it will need to be converted into a junior bed or toddler bed.

This is the only cot we tested with an adjustable base. The lowest setting is ideal for babies who are in a supine position. The highest setting is recommended when your baby is able to roll over. This is a crucial feature as children can suffocate if their head becomes trapped between gaps or protrusions within the cot.

The only downside to this cot is that it's not particularly transportable, since it requires an enormous amount of effort to fold and can be a bit finicky when trying to position the legs in a proper position. Additionally, it's the largest cot we've reviewed and is a bit heavy to carry around if you have to move it far from its storage location.

Triple Cot

Cots are specially designed for newborns and provide an ideal sleeping area that is safe to ensure that your baby gets the rest they require. The base can be raised to accommodate the baby's developmental stage. They are generally lower than beds. A lot of cots have drop-sides that allow you to sleep in a safe environment with your newborn. It also allows you to feed your baby at the evening. Some cots have the option of removing one side completely which allows you to use it as an infant bassinet. This is a safer alternative to co-sleeping with your child in your bed.

Some cots also have extra features that simplify the lives of parents. They include an under-bed drawer which is ideal for storage, rails that protect teething babies, and a riser leg which can create a slight angle to help reflux babies. This includes the sides and depth of the cot as well as its storage capacity, if it comes with a hood that can be removed, and if the cot includes bedding. Make sure there is enough room to move around and that it is not too close to windows or heat sources.

Quadruple Cot

A lot of them have a removable side rail to keep your baby close while they sleep. If you have kids of your own You may consider one with a bunk bed that can be turned into one bed.

Many cots have an adjustable mattress that can be adjusted upwards and downwards to meet your baby's height. This can be a good option if you're worried that your baby could slip during the night, and also beneficial for when your child starts to stand. Many cot mattresses are constructed out of natural materials, such as wool or cotton, but there are some made of polyurethane foam too.

Pick a cot that has mesh sides. This will allow air to circulate to keep your baby cool. Make sure you check the length of the bars too as they should not be more than 6.5cm apart to prevent your baby from escaping. Another thing to consider is how easy it is to clean. Find out if it's machine washable and what the care instructions are for the fabric and any parts that are removable.
