How to Get a Category A1 Driving Licence

The Category A1 license allows people to operate small motorcycles without a sidecar. The cylinder size of the motorcycle must be less than or equal to 125 cubic centimeters, and its power cannot exceed 11 kW.

The license also permits you to drive motor vehicles and trailer combinations with an authorized maximum weight of 8,250 kilograms. The categories of vehicles that you are allowed to drive will vary depending on when you completed your test.

Motorbikes

The first step in obtaining a motorbike license is to pass a driving test of category A1. The license is valid for two years and allows you to ride motorcycles with a up to 11kW of power. This includes mopeds and trials e-scooters as well as motocross bikes. Before you can take the test, you have to complete training with a qualified instructor. The number of training hours required is based on your previous experience and learning progress.

After completing the training, you are ready to take your driving test for category A1. The test is split into a theoretical and a practical test. All Norwegian driving licences have text preprinted either in Nynorsk or bokmal, based on the place they were issued. The state recognizes that the different forms of Norwegian have the same status. The word 'bokmal' signifies that the text is written in the bokmal form, while the words 'nynorsk' show that the text is written in the nynorsk form. The Norwegian driving license also contains a form for people with impaired vision that indicates they must wear an eyeglass when driving.

Trailers

A category A1 licence permits you to operate a motor car that can tow a trailer of up to 750kg. This category covers vehicles that aren't covered by any other category, such as electric cars. You can also use the category A license to drive a motorbike with an engine that is 125cc or more, and a maximum power output of 11kW. You require the category B licence for driving an automobile with a trailer weighting more than 750kg.

A vehicle that has an authorised maximum mass that is more than 750kg must be driven under a separate licence, category E. The trailer and vehicle must be driven by a driver who has a licence for that category or for category D if the vehicle is a bus. The driver must be at minimum 21 years old, and have held an category B licence for at least two years.

If you plan to drive a vehicle that has more than 750kg of trailer you must hold a category C licence. This includes vans, trucks and other vehicles used to transport goods. However, it does not include passenger automobiles. The license is valid for three years. You must also have completed the mandatory basic training and passed both a formal and practical test.

Class A licenses are required for drivers wanting to drive vehicles over 10000gvw, or trailers that exceed 26000gvw. This kind of license is offered in many states, and is targeted specifically at those who wish to pull RVs.

Depending on your state You may have to satisfy additional requirements to obtain a license. Some require that you take an exam in writing, while others have varying age restrictions for new drivers.
