How is a Microwave Built?

Microwave ovens have brought home convenience to a new level. They can be placed in the wall cabinets or on the top of kitchen islands. They are constructed from a variety materials.

In 1940 the cavity magnetron device emitting microwaves was developed at Birmingham University in England. Percy Spencer realized that this device could be used to heat food when he observed eggs and corn pop cook.

Raw Materials

Microwave (MW) heating is gaining a lot of attention in the field of material processing because of its inherent advantages, including rapid heating and uniform heating, as well as its non-contact nature and low energy consumption. The basic materials required for the construction of microwave ovens include plastic components, metals, and other electrical parts. In the present NOPR test procedures, today's NOPR require that microwaves be tested in their microwave-only cooking mode and convection microwave cooking modes in order to assess the energy consumption of appliances under typical usage conditions. The test method uses mixtures of water and other basic ingredients from food that are designed to replicate the food items that are reheated in the microwave. The mixtures are placed in a borosilicate glass container, heated in the microwave oven, and later measured for thermal efficiency.


Packaging

Many microwave-ready dishes employ a special process of packaging called modified atmospheric packaging (MAP). This method of packaging makes use of oxygen-eliminating gases to prolong the shelf life of pre-prepared foods. These gases are typically made from carbon dioxide, oxygen pure as well as nitrogen.
