They are easily bored and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves when their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive, and even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw does not feel threatened. In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds that love to play, climb and play. They require at least 2 to 3 hours per day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They enjoy visiting parks and playgrounds as well as local restaurants and bars. They are not just a great pet but also a wonderful companion for children. Despite their adorable nature, these birds are very loud and can be a distraction to those living near. They can emit ear-splitting screeches and loud cries that can be annoying to those who live in condos or apartments. Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means that males and females are hard to tell apart. Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. This can be a long process and the owner must be patient and understand that this is a difficult task. Positive reinforcement can help accelerate the process and help correct any behavior issues. Lolita's care Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her were hopeful that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she never had a chance to return to the sea. The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and harming her immune system. In addition, they keep her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat. Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative in a plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could live for the duration of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself, not a concrete tank. If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Macaws with gold and blue colors frequently make loud screams that include "flock calls," which is part of their normal behavior. They might even play a game of squabbling and chewing at times, especially when they are annoyed or bored. This kind of behavior should be expected of potential pet owners. Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on the condition of Lolita and her health however there are many questions. Akromas and others who have been trained or supervised Lolita's health in the past are concerned about her diet. According to the most recent update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds salmon every day, as well as herring, capelin and squid. Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita, has been critiqued for the quality of food that they feed their killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is threatened in the wild, she is in an aquarium that some consider too small for her. Lolita's Health While her beauty is undeniable, Lolita's health continues to decline. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare groups who wish to see her returned to the wild. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for many years. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile condition. The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita's current state of health. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. They have shown that she is aging rapidly and her health is declining. As her captor does not have to divulge the information, it's unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity. Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita Many people are hopeful that she could be closer than ever before to living a wild life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to move the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific. After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary and she will be able to go swimming in the deep sea and perhaps be being reunited with her mother orca. Unfortunately these plans came late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal problem.
