The Best Drip Coffee Machines

Drip coffee makers are workhorses capable of hands-off brewing. They can be big and bulky, taking up valuable counter space or cabinet space.

The best drip machines have a simple design and are easy to use. Some come with extras that make a morning cup of coffee more customizable such as timers that are programmable and self-cleaning modes.

1. De'Longhi TrueBrew

The De'Longhi TrueBrew is a one-stop shop for coffee - it goes from whole beans to a full carafe using just a few presses. It comes with a built-in burr grinder (taken directly from De'Longhi's espresso machines) that measures out the proper amount of coffee grounds and compacts them prior to making coffee, eliminating the need for pods and plastic filters.

It also offers a range of settings to fit your preferred cup size or design, from 3oz espresso drinks to 16oz of iced tea and 40oz for the standard carafe. It dispenses the coffee into your choice of vessel, from large cups to tiny espresso cups or tall travel mugs that do not normally fit in regular drip machines. It even creates tea!

Manufacturers are known to come up with ridiculous technical-sounding jargon and this one includes the Bean Extract Technology which "adapts and precisely grinds" the beans based on the choice you make. That's all marketing. It's essential that it's easy to use, fast and doesn't cause a lot of mess when brewing. It's not able to make a quick shot or a long shot of espresso and does not come with steam wand. If you're looking to get those features, I would suggest looking into the Moccamaster KBGV Select instead.

2. Cuisinart MultiServe

This is among the best drip coffee machines on the market. It consistently produces delicious hot cups of joe that brew quickly and efficiently from sleek, relatively compact components that are easy to operate, all at an extremely reasonable price.

We also loved the ease at which we were able to customize the brewing experience. With just a dial turn you can select your cup size (from a 5-ounce single-serving to a full-carafe), your desired strength and whether you'd like a regular or French press setting. You can even make cold brew using the touch of the button, or select from a variety of special options like Over Ice and Roasted.

The only downside is that the design doesn't resemble the other more sophisticated models we tested. For instance, the rounded Smeg drip machine looks like an Easter egg and is a welcome contrast to the boxy models. Its narrow opening and slender tank can be difficult to navigate, especially in the dark when the brew is on. It takes some concentration and effort to start the process in the early morning.

3. Keurig K-Cup brewer

Keurig single-serve coffee makers make use of K-cups prepackaged and ready to use, eliminating the necessity of measuring and grinding grounds and control brewing times. They can also brew coffee within less than two minutes. This is significantly faster than a drip maker.

The Keurigs that we tested created much more mess than drip machines. The spout that spews hot coffee creates a two-inch splash zone, which leaves droplets on the drip tray, machine, and counter. They also create an irritating, loud sputtering noise while brewing.

The Keurigs that we tested worked well, despite the mess. The K-Cafe Smart Keurig is the most sophisticated model, comes with a detachable water reservoir, four K-cups sizes with three temperature settings, and a user-friendly program. It also has a milk frother that can be used to froth whole, skim or non-dairy milk. It's a great option for those who want to brew a different cup of coffee every morning or for those with large families who need a bigger capacity.

The Keurig Instant Pod is also a excellent option for those who is looking for a simple single-serve machine that is easy to use. It comes with a huge 78-ounce water tank that can make several cups before it needs to be refilled. It also allows brewing using grounds from your own coffee, a feature that is not often found in a Keurig. Coffeee are simple and easy to use however, the machine communicates using tones and chirps, not a display, making it difficult to know when a cup is ready.

4. Cuisinart Drip Machine

This sturdy, affordable machine has all the features you require to get your day started. It comes with a large reservoir that holds 14 cups, and an open window that clearly shows the level of water. It is simple to use due to the large buttons that have clearly labeled labels. The grinder and filter that can be removed can both be cleaned in the sink. This eliminates the need to brush out the grounds from hard-to reach areas. It also includes a handy brew-strength selector, which lets you choose between three different settings, including bold.

The reservoir comes with a charcoal-filter that removes metals and unpleasant flavors as well as odors from the tap water. This can cause the coffee to taste flat or burned. That means less maintenance and a better-tasting cup of coffee.

A second benefit: the programmability feature lets you to set your coffee brew to a certain time. The pause button lets you to pour one or two cups of coffee before the entire pot has finished brewing, which can be beneficial for busy mornings when you require an extra dose of caffeine. It's also a very attractive looking coffee maker, with an elegant design that appears more at home on the counter than the majority of boxy drip machines.

5. Ratio Six

Like its predecessor, the Ratio Eight, the Six offers premium quality with a more affordable price and smaller footprint. Its single-button brewing process mimics an expert pour over, with precise metered water flow and ideal coffee temperature. The machine makes use of a powerful 1400 watts to heat water and complete the full brewing process in about five to six minutes, which is far shorter than most of the lesser models we have tested. The rapid brew is largely due to the blooming process which allows grounds of coffee to settle before the shower head, which then delivers the rest of the water to ensure optimal extraction.

The Six also features a distinctive heat shield to protect the spray head while making and to keep the water at the optimum temperature. It is among a few brewers that has been Golden Cup certified by Specialty Coffee Association. This means that it keeps the correct temperature throughout the cycle of brewing.

The Six is elegant, minimalist and sleek in design. It features a stainless steel carafe on the top of a Melitta flat bottom filter holder. The carafe is insulated, which keeps the brewed coffee warm without the need for a heated plate and helps preserve the flavor.

6. Gevi 10-Cup Espresso Maker

The Gevi produces great tasting coffee and comes with a sleek, relatively compact design that doesn't require any counter space. Its touchscreen panel features cute icons that let you select one-touch commands (such as Bold, or if you're making only half a cup, the One to Four cup option). The machine lets you set the timer and turn on or off the audible tone that signals the end of the brew cycle.

It's nice to have a built-in coffee grinder that lets you adjust the size and the strength of your coffee. It takes some time to get used to the machine however once you've mastered it, the machine is easy to use. It includes many of the features that you would expect to find in more expensive models.

The only downside is that it's not able to brew an entire carafe at one time which could be a problem if you're serving a lot of people. It's a good choice when you're looking for a drip coffeemaker with a built in grinder, and the capability to make different drinks. It also comes with a one-year warranty and excellent customer service.

7. Moccamaster KBGV

The Moccamaster KBGV is a premium drip coffee maker that's built to last. It comes with a five-year warranty and is made in the Netherlands by Technivorm. The stylish glass carafe is placed on top of a warmer which keeps the coffee at a consistent temperature for up six minutes. It can be programmed to brew a full or half pot, and it's certified to brew at the optimal times and temperatures suggested by the Specialty Coffee Association. It also comes with a "practically hidden drip stop," which is a tiny lever located below the brew basket that stop the flow of coffee when you remove the carafe during the brewing.

The machine is more expensive than many other models on the market, but it's worth the cost for those who want to enjoy consistently excellent coffee without spending a lot in the kitchen. It's easy to clean and all components that come in contact with water or grounds are easily accessible. While the brew process takes longer than other models, it's still quicker than pour-over making. Additionally, the Moccamaster's unique design, which is reminiscent of workshop tools or other scientific equipment, adds the perfect touch of elegance to your kitchen.
