What to Look For in a Wood Burner Clearance Sale

Efficiency

When looking for a clearance sale on wood burners, you should be aware of the efficiency of the appliance. The overall efficiency of a wood burner determines how much heat is transferred to your home instead of going up the chimney. This directly relates to the amount you pay on wood for fire and how often you use your wood burner. EPA certified stoves must demonstrate the ability to burn and heat efficiently. To get the most bang for your money, search for a wood stove with an EPA-listed overall efficiency of at 70% or more. Higher efficiency means less waste and a greater savings on fuel. They also mean less time spent chopping and stacking wood, and fewer trips to the pile during winter storms. This means more time to enjoy cozy nights in with a fire.

Safety

Most wood stoves sold today have been tested for safety. Stoves not tested include stoves purchased used, stoves made in small welding workshops and antique stoves. Most insurance companies are reluctant to offer policies for homes with stoves that aren't certified.

A certified stove will have an indication of the minimum distance required between the stove and combustible surfaces such as furniture and walls. This information is also provided in the manufacturer's installation instructions. The test performed by the manufacturer will indicate if the stove meets the requirements for fire resistance.

Even with proper clearances the wood burning device can be dangerous. Don't leave children unattended in a room with wood burning equipment. They can be extremely hot and could cause burns to your skin and clothing in seconds. Also, be sure to unplug the device when you're not using it.

Fire safety is not only about building materials. It also covers cleaning products and rags stored near a stove. Keep curtains, blankets and throws away from the open space of the stove.

Wood Burning Stoves listed above can be reduced by the use of shielding that is appropriate. You should always consult with the manufacturer to determine the recommended clearances. If you are uncertain about the suitability of a specific shielding material, talk to your local building control officer or inspector to ensure it's in compliance with current regulations for fire safety. It's also a good idea to install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors around your stove.
