The concept of natural selection as the underlying principle of evolution is the central force in the current biology. It combines disciplines such as microbiology, palaeontology, genetics and palaeontology.

However, the study of evolution is often controversial, and the resultant misinformation can confuse people regarding its basic concepts. This site can help explain the most important concepts.


What is Evolution?

The modern conception of evolution focuses on the gradual, cumulative changes that occur within populations over time. These changes are the results of natural selection. This is a process that increases the number organisms with beneficial traits, which help them to live and reproduce in certain environments. As a result, these organisms produce more offspring than those who don't possess the beneficial traits. This causes a genetic change that can eventually lead to the creation of new species.

The term "evolution" is often associated with "survival-of-the best" which means that those who are better adjusted to certain conditions will have an advantage over those less well adapted. However it is only one of the many different ways in which evolution can occur.

Another popular way to use the word evolution is to suggest that species can change from one state to the next. This type of view of evolution is known as anagenetic or cladogenesis. The scientific definition of evolution does not support this idea. The scientific theory of evolutionary change focuses instead on the changes that occur in populations over time. These changes are caused by mutations that produce natural selection and genomic variation.

Charles Darwin was one of the scientists who backed this idea. Others, such as Alfred Russel Wallace, who came up with the macroevolution theory and believed that this was the only way that the higher forms of life could have evolved from the lower forms.

A concept must be able stand against rigorous tests and evidence in order to be considered a theory. Evolution has stood the test of time, and has been backed by many scientific disciplines, from geology to biology, chemistry to astronomy. Evolution is the foundation of science and is backed by the majority of scientists around the globe. However, there are many misconceptions about the theory of evolution, particularly the relationship it has with religion.

What is the Theory of Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific explanation of how living things change over time. It is based on a variety of well-established and observable facts: that more offspring are created than are likely to survive; that individuals differ from each other in their physical characteristics (phenotype) and that various traits confer varying rates of reproduction and survival and reproduction; and that these traits can be passed on to future generations. These observations are backed by the increasing amount of evidence from molecular biology, palaeontology functional morphology, climatology, and geology.

The theory of evolution through natural selection was developed independently by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in the late 19th century to provide an explanation for why organisms are adapted to their biological and physical environment. Some people are against evolution because they believe that it implies there is no purpose for life. Many scientists who are religious such as the Cambridge Palaeontologist Simon Conway Morris (BioLogos, 2014) believe that evolution is compatible with faith in God and is even enhanced by it.

Many highly qualified evolutionary biologists have been involved in developing and testing the theory of evolution, which includes several highly respected evangelical Christian leaders. Many of these researchers have contributed to the understanding of a wide range of phenomena, like phylogenetics, genomics, and the formation and purpose of fossils.

The word "theory" that is often used incorrectly refers to scientific hypothesis that has been tested and refined over time. Scientists test their theories by repeating the experiment or observations that led to them. Therefore, the theory of evolution has been repeatedly tested out, as have the related theories of Copernican, atomic and germ theory.

What is the Process of Evolution?

The process of evolution is the gradual change over time in the proportion of genetically distinct individuals within a certain species. This is the result of the natural selection of individuals that are more adapted to their environment. The more adapted individuals have higher chances of reproducing and survival. As more of these individuals survive and reproduce their genes, they become more common in the population. This process is sometimes called "survival for the strongest."

According to the theory of evolution the causes of mutations that result in genetic variation are the primary reason for evolution. These mutations may occur at random or under the influence of the environment. If mutations occur in a random manner and occur in a random manner, the frequency of the allele will vary from generation to generation. When an alteration is beneficial it can increase the frequency of the allele, causing it to spread through the population.

The changes in frequency of alleles can lead to new species over time. The new species may grow and evolve into newer forms. This process is known as macroevolution. They also acknowledge that the process of evolution happens over a long time, usually millions of years. They differ in the importance of various factors that could speed up or slow down the process. For example the role played by sexual selection, environmental pressures and mutation bias. Despite these disagreements, most scientists believe that evolution is real and that the evidence to prove it is overwhelming.

What is the Evidence of Evolution?

Since Darwin's time, scientists have collected evidence to back his theory of evolution. This evidence is gathered from fossils that show the evolution of organisms over time. Another evidence comes from the similarities between living organisms embryology, biogeography, genetics and comparative anatomy.
