Best Single Brew Coffee Makers

There's nothing more satisfying than a cup of freshly brewed coffee at the beginning of your day. This is why we love single-brew coffee makers.

Take note of what is essential to you in terms of your brewing needs and what features think are frills. Our criteria includes a large water reservoir, multiple brew settings, and the possibility to use reusable coffee pods.

1. Is it possible to purchase capsules or ground coffee in this machine?

Depending on the style you prefer, you can choose one that uses coffee pods or beans ground. While we've included a few models that rely solely on coffee pods in our list, the majority can accommodate both. This versatility makes them an excellent option for those who like having a range of options in their arsenal.

Our top pick, the Nespresso Vertuo Plus, is a great example of this. It's a part of the more recent Vertuoline from the company and comes with an unbeatable one-touch system that gives amazing espresso shots and freshly brewed beans. It's also the most efficient machine in our tests, and comes with reusable capsules that are kinder to the environment than K-Cups.

The Cuisinart grind & blend is a great option for those who prefer to grind coffee. It uses an integrated conical burr grinder to create freshly-ground coffee, and it has three preset brewing sizes -eight, ten, and twelve ounces. It's more expensive than the other single-serve options in our selection however it's among the most delicious ones we test.

The Instant Pot Dual Pod Plus, our runner-up is a great choice for those who wish to be able to utilize both kinds of pods and grounds. It's a versatile machine that can brew with Keurig K-Cups, original Nespresso pods, and also the company's own compostable capsules (though they require an industrial composting facility). It also produces some of the hottest coffees of any machine we've tested to date, while providing a range of additional functions, such as hot water for tea and milk frother.

2. Does it have a large water reservoir?

The best single-brew coffee maker has a large reservoir that can comfortably meet your needs. This will prevent your machine from running out of water constantly and affecting the quality of the coffee. When you are choosing a coffee maker the amount of water in the reservoir is crucial. It will determine the frequency you need to refill and drain the tank.

The BLACK+DECKER Compact Single-Serve Coffee Maker is an excellent option for anyone seeking a user-friendly machine that won't break the bank. It can brew a cup of coffee in under two minutes and can be programmed up to 24 hours in advance, making it perfect for those who prefer to grab their joe at the go. This machine has a compact design that fits well on a small countertop and is the cheapest of our top selections. It also produces the most hot coffee and comes with an integrated travel cup to make it easy. It didn't get as high a score as other brewers we tested, however, and its water reservoir is relatively small.

If you're willing spend more, the Keurig Super Smart Single-Serve coffee maker is our recommendation for upgrading. It's a great design and features that stood out during our testing. It offers fast brewing times, high coffee temperatures, and the possibility of three brew sizes, and it's extremely easy to use. It's only downside is that you have to decal it for an hour which can be a hassle for those who drink lots of coffee.

3. Does it have multiple brewing settings?

This method also uses cooler water, which helps preserve the flavor of your coffee.

Epi's reviews editor Noah Kaufman is a big fan of the single-serve Bruvi coffee maker because it offers a variety of single-touch brewing options that make for the perfect cup of coffee, whether you prefer a less acidic drink or an espresso-style shot over ice. The Bruvi has a brewing option that is more time-consuming than a quick brew but is worth it if you want a rich and smooth cup.

In our tests the Bruvi consistently produced the most hot and consistent cup of coffee among all the single-serve machines we tried. Its brewing cycle is easy to program and the timer can keep your beverage warm for up to 4 hours. If you're a fan of cold brew The Bruvi also comes with a setting for brewing that can adjust the temperature and brew times to create a deliciously refreshing beverage.

Another notable feature was the Breville Precision Brewer, which has six brewing modes, including Gold Fast, Strong, Fast, and Iced. The Gold Brew Setting follows Specialty Coffee Association guidelines for an ideal cup of coffee, while the other settings are adjustable, allowing you to tailor your experience to fit your personal preferences. The Breville Precision is narrower than many single-serve coffee brewers that we tried. This helped it to keep its brew temperature constant and encourage deeper saturation and a more consistent extraction of the beans.

4. Does it come with self-cleaning features?

The best single-cup coffee makers come with self-cleaning features that eliminate any leftover grounds or used K-Cup pods out of the machine after each use. Certain models even notify you of the need for cleaning cycles. It's important to check the machine's user manual or manufacturer website for specific guidelines because different machines use different cleaning techniques.

The single-serve coffee maker from Bruvi is one of our favorites because it features a simple and intuitive user interface, makes great tasting coffee, and requires minimal daily maintenance. It can be used to brew hot or cold drinks. It also offers a variety of brewing options that can be done with one touch which include low acid, Americano, and cold brew. It takes longer to brew when compared to other models. However, this is only a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent product.

This coffee maker is among our budget picks because it's not expensive and does a great job making a cup of coffee. It comes with a removable 40 ounce water tank and can be used with both K-Cups as well as ground coffee. The user manual contains specific instructions on how to remove the reservoir, re-fill it and then perform regular descaling. It can brew any type of coffee, unlike many other single-cup machines.

This coffee maker is a fantastic alternative for those who appreciate the convenience of single-serve coffee, but dislikes the taste or waste of K-Cups. It comes with a large water tank, as well as a built-in grinder that makes it easy to make a delicious cup of joe from ground beans. It comes with a variety of brewing options including bold and over-ice. It can also be used with reusable K-Cups and the brand's recycled pods. It also comes with a steam button to make tea, and a fold-away frother.

5. Is it programmable?

The most programmable espresso maker lets you set it up the night before, so you can awake to a freshly brewed cup of coffee. single pod coffee is particularly useful for those in a hurry or who don't prefer a pour-over or Moka pot.

Most programmable machines offer a basic timer of 24 hours. If you're looking for more advanced features, you may be interested in De'Longhi's COM532 that is our top single-cup pod machine. It comes with a digital touch screen and a variety of settings to customize your coffee, including the brew temperature and intensity. It's expensive, yet it produces the hottest coffee of any of our machines and its carafe keeps it at the ideal drinking temperature for over an hour after brewing.

Black + Decker Classic single-serve coffeemaker is a low-cost, programmeable machine that can be programmed. It's easy to use, has a small footprint and is compatible with ESE pods (Eco-friendly single-serve). It also scored well in our tests of taste, brews quickly, and has an easy-to-remove water tank, which is dishwasher safe.

If you are tired of pre-packaged pods and like to save money, an individual-cup or manual drip brewer is an excellent alternative. You can grind your own beans to get a fresher taste and get more control over the flavor of your beverage. It is more time-consuming than using a machine that utilizes pods, however if you are a fan of coffee, it could be worth it. Make sure you weigh your beans and ground coffee using a scale rather than measuring by volume, so that you can achieve the best results.
