What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work? In contrast to older keys, modern car keys have chips inside that are specific to each vehicle. Transponder Codes As its name suggests, transponders transmit an encoded signal containing the four-digit code when it is being questioned by air traffic control. This signal is known as an SQUAWK code and forms the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to relay an exact message to the air traffic control system in a crisis or to inform controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes are commonly employed to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to talk on the radio and are essential to ensure safe flying. Every aircraft has a transponder that responds to radar probes by identifying a code. This enables ATC to identify an aircraft on a busy screen. Transponders can be programmed to respond in different ways when interrogated. Mode A transmits the code only and mode C provides altitude data. Mode S transponders give more details, such as call signs and position which are useful in airspace that is congested. Most aircraft have a small, beige box under the pilot's seat. The discrete code blocks are set up using statistical analysis to limit the chance that two aircrafts with identical SQUAWK codes will be in the same area at the same time. The 17 digits of the VIN code are a combination letters and numbers which can be decoded in order to reveal vital information about your vehicle or truck. Modern cars are loaded with a vast amount of information regarding their history and specifications they act as digital libraries that are mobile. The key to accessing this information is the VIN number. This lets you determine everything from if your vehicle was subject to recalls, to the many owners it has had.
