CAMHS ADHD Assessment

If your child or teenager is struggling, they could be referred to CAMHS for ADHD assessment. They will usually be asked to bring with them their parent(s)/guardian(s) and a teacher who knows them well.

In response to COVID-19 parents and caregivers' responses to interviews highlighted the benefits of remote appointments but also that face-to–face appointments would be preferred during assessments.

Symptoms

Diagnosis

If your child is directed to a CAMHS ADHD assessment service they will usually be seen by a couple of members of the team. The team will use standardised assessment techniques and detailed history taking to evaluate the child's needs. The CAMHS team may then decide that your child requires further tests and they will refer them to a clinical psychologist. The psychologist will conduct various tests to determine how your child handles their emotions and behavior in different situations. They will assess the way your child behaves in a variety of environments, including at home, school and public spaces.

During the assessment the doctor will discuss with you and your child about what they have found out. They will then issue an assessment and discuss options for treatment with you. It is common to use medication to help people with ADHD, but this will not remove all of their symptoms.

Rotherham CAMHS is divided into multiple pathways and the "ADHD Assessment pathway" is part of the Neurodevelopmental assessment pathway. Certain children and adolescents will be assessed for ADHD through the Intellectual Disability CAMHS pathway. This is due to their a higher level of cognitive capability and their issues are more complex than other children and young people who use CAMHS. Treatment

The NHS provides specialized help for children and adolescents with ADHD through an in-person service within your area. This could include a psychiatrist, a psychologist or a nurse. You will be asked to describe your symptoms, and how they impact your life. They might also talk to your parents, teachers or other caregivers. A recent report2 highlighted the issue of long waiting times for CAMHS services. The waiting times for assessment of ADHD are particularly long, even with high-quality care. Although national guidelines3 and local transformation plans4 stress the need for early identification of children and young people with ADHD and guidelines on assessment has been produced but there is no specific guidelines regarding how long the child or young person should wait to be seen.

This project was created to speed up the time for the ADHD assessment. This was achieved through the use of a simple data collection tool and integrating it into the clinical system. This has allowed the average amount of time from the time of referral to the day of the ADHD assessment feedback to be cut down. The QI team would like to thank City and Hackney CAMHS ADHD for their commitment and hard work throughout this project.

If the medication is prescribed by a specialist, they will discuss the options with you and your family. There are a variety of medications that treat ADHD. However they all have different effects. It is important that you understand what to expect from any treatment.

There are many non-pharmacological treatments that can aid in reducing ADHD symptoms. These include parenting programs such as behaviour therapy, and psychological treatments. The project involved twelve people who had been referred recently to the CAMHS ADHD route within a local Trust. The interviews were semi-structured and they were conducted over the phone. Participants were recruited through a purposeful sampling technique. This technique was chosen because it is regarded to be more ethical than the randomised controlled trial method which is typically used for a research study.

In the wake of the QI project, the wait times from initial referral to ADHD assessment have decreased substantially. This is in line with trust-level targets and reflects the emphasis on increasing efficiency and capacity across the CAMHS system. The team employed a change model and Plan-Do–Study–Act cycles to effect positive changes in the ADHD process.


A diagnosis of ADHD can be beneficial in obtaining an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) for your child. The EHCP will permit your school to implement additional support for your child, including medication or training courses.
