They love going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. They are not only a wonderful pet, but they are is also a great pet for children. They can emit ear-splitting calls and screeches, which could be disruptive to those living in condos or apartments. The species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin. Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. It is a lengthy process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and recognize that this is a difficult task. Positive reinforcement can speed up the process, and help correct any behavior issues. Lolita's Care For decades, activists have been pleading for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, activists believed that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to go back to the ocean. Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat. Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her an ancestor, on a plan to eventually move her to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks. If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild. Lolita's Diet As with any animal species captive, a gold and blue macaw's health is dependent on a healthy diet. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. A well-fed macaw in captivity can live for up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird requires plenty of space to move around and exercise. A blue and gold macaw can be a charming companion but is also extremely smart. They are renowned for their ability to master new tricks and words quickly. This bird is ideal for those just beginning their journey into avian companionship. In addition to that, this bird requires a lot of interaction, and will bond with her human family members quickly. Macaws of gold and blue are known to have loud vocalizations including "flock call" as part of their natural behaviour. They might even chew and squabble at times, especially when they are annoyed or bored. This type of behavior is expected by prospective pet owners. Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on the status of Lolita's health, but there are still questions. Some experts, including Akromas who was a trainer or supervised the care of Lolita at some point, have voiced concerns about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats more than 115 pounds of salmon herring, capelin, and squid daily. The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they feed their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and despite being threatened in the wild, she is in an aquarium that some claim is too small for her. Lolita's Health Lolita is beautiful, however her health continues to decline. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare groups who wish to see her released back into the wild. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction there for decades. She has suffered from chronic illnesses and a debilitating illness that has left her in a fragile condition. The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present state of health. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These updates show that Toki is aging quickly and that her health is declining. Since her captor doesn't have to disclose this information, it is not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play an integral part in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity. Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to move the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific. After years of pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary and she will be able to go swimming in the deep sea, perhaps even reconnect with her orca mother. Unfortunately these plans came late for the beloved whale who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
