About Toto Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from a Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music. In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a flop however, they bounce back with their fourth album Isolation which contains two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household name around the globe. After a gap of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It marks a step away from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and features some heavy rock. This album was their first to be certified platinum in North America. During the recording process for the fifth album the group loses their manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost. In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begin an extensive tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. Kingdom of Desire was another successful album. After a world-tour, Bobby Kimball quit the group. He was replaced by Fergie Frederiksen of Le Roux. The band continued to release their fifth studio album, Isolation. The album featured a few songs, including "Stranger in Town". After Isolation Toto was released, the band went on a hiatus. The break gave each member of the band the opportunity to explore their individual projects. In 1996, the band returned for a tour and album. This was the first time the original members took to the stage together for over a decade. The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members appeared on stage at once. Following this, the band was again disbanded. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in 31 year that all of Toto's founding members performed together. Despite their acclaim the group had to face a number of challenges in their final years. In 2002, drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group, and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence due to health issues. Shem von Schröeck took over however the band was not the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, Toto decided to take off from touring following changes to the lineup and a series of disappointing releases.
