ADHD Medications For Adults and Children

Medications can help people with ADHD feel more relaxed, concentrate better, and be less impulsive. They're not a cure however they can greatly enhance the quality of life of your child.

Adults suffering from ADHD are usually prescribed stimulants. They boost dopamine levels and increase concentration.

Doctors often prescribe long-acting stimulants to limit the potential for abuse and symptoms of rebound.

Stimulants

Stimulants are drugs which increase the activity of certain chemicals within the brain. They can help those who have ADHD stay focused and productive. They can also improve motivation and mood, as well as reduce irritability and impulsivity. The most common stimulants used to treat ADHD are amphetamines and methylphenidates. These drugs are available in a variety of forms and are prescribed by doctors in a variety of dosages. These medicines can be extremely efficient but also carry the potential for misuse and addiction. People who have had a history of psychiatric issues are at greater risk for misuse, and should be monitored closely.

The stimulation from these drugs increases the flow of blood to the brain and can trigger a surge of happiness. When the medication is finished it is common for people to experience a sharp decrease in energy levels and feelings of anxiety or depression. Combining stimulant and non-stimulant ADHD medication may reduce these side-effects.

When adults take ADHD medication the potential for abuse is a major concern particularly when they combine stimulants with other substances or high doses. Illicit drugs, such as MDMA or cocaine, may stimulate the same brain chemicals that are used in prescription stimulants. Students at colleges, especially those who are awarded athletic or academic scholarships, are also at risk of misusing stimulant drugs. They may use them for an "rush" for studying or for pulling all-nighters to improve performance in sports or other activities. If misused, these substances could cause serious psychological or physical harm.

All stimulants carry the possibility of abuse and addiction. People who have an underlying history of depression or bipolar disorder could be at greater risk for this. adhd no medication who are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), must also wait at least 14 days before taking stimulants.

Most stimulant medicines are prescribed in short courses or controlled doses. This allows your doctor monitor your child's or your own body's reactions to determine whether the medication is effective. Your doctor may ask you to make regular appointments so that they can monitor how the medication helps you or your child.

Non-stimulant medicines

Non-stimulant ADHD medication is prescribed when stimulants do not work or cause unacceptably adverse negative side effects. They operate by increasing levels norepinephrine which is a brain chemical. The medications can be administered orally, or by injection.

In adhd no medication , medications that are not stimulant have lower rates of dependency and abuse than stimulants. They are cheaper than stimulants.

The medications in this class include atomoxetine (Ritalin) and desmethylphenidates, such as Strattera and Kapvay.

Treatment options for ADHD in Adults

A combination of psychosocial therapies and medication is the most effective treatment for adult ADHD. People with ADHD can learn how to organize their life and improve their social skills through behavioral therapy. It is beneficial to take medication for the majority of people suffering from ADHD however, it is crucial to use it regularly and as prescribed.
