The Theory of Evolution

The theory of evolution is based on the idea that certain traits are passed down more often than others. These characteristics make it easier to reproduce and survive for individuals, and their number tends to increase with time.

Scientists understand now how this process operates. A study of the clawed-frog showed that duplicate genes could serve different purposes.

The process of evolution occurs naturally

Natural selection is the process that leads to organisms evolving to be best at adapting to the environment they live in. It is one of the main processes of evolution that is accompanied by mutations as well as migrations and genetic drift. People with traits that aid in reproduction and survival are more likely to pass these characteristics on to their offspring, leading to gradual changes in the frequency of genes over time. This results in the creation of new species and transformation of existing ones.

Charles Darwin developed a scientific theory in the early 19th century that explains how the evolution of organisms has occurred over time. The theory is based on the notion that more offspring are created than are able to survive and that the offspring compete with each other for resources in their physical environments. This results in an "struggle for existence" in which the ones with the most advantageous traits win, and others are eliminated. The remaining offspring pass on the genes for these beneficial traits to their children, which in turn give them an advantage over other members of the same species. As time passes, the organisms that have these traits grow in size.

It is difficult to comprehend how natural selection can create new traits when its primary purpose is to eliminate those who are not physically fit. Furthermore, ??? ???? of natural selection reduce genetic variation within populations. Natural selection is unlikely to produce new traits without the involvement of other forces.

Mutation, drift genetic and migration are three major evolutionary forces which change the frequency of gene expression. Sexual reproduction and the fact each parent transmits half their genes to their children increases the speed of these processes. These genes, also known as alleles can occur at different frequency between individuals belonging to the same species. The allele frequencies determine whether a trait is dominant or recessive.

A mutation is essentially an alteration in the DNA code of an organism. This change causes some cells to grow and develop into a distinct entity, while others don't. Mutations can increase the frequency of alleles that already exist or create new ones. The new alleles will be passed to subsequent generations, and then become the dominant phenotype.

BioMed Central states that this will eventually cause the trait to spread throughout the population. Eventually, all members of the population will have the trait, and the population will change. This is called evolution.

People who have less adaptive traits will die off or be unable to produce offspring and their genes won't make it into future generations. Over time, the genetically modified species will take over the population and evolve into new species. But, this isn't an absolute process. The environment can change abruptly and the adaptions to be obsolete.

Sexual selection is another aspect that influences the evolution. Some traits are favored because they increase the odds of a person mating an individual. This can result in some bizarre phenotypes such as brightly-colored plumage on birds or huge antlers on deer. These phenotypes may not be beneficial to the organism but they can increase its chances of survival and reproduction.

Some students also misunderstand natural evolution because they confuse it with "soft inheritance". Although soft inheritance isn't a necessary condition for evolution, it is an important element of it. This is because it allows for random modification of DNA, and the creation of new genetic variants that aren't immediately useful to an organism. These mutations then become the raw material upon which natural selection acts.

Genetics is the basis of evolution

It combines macroevolutionary changes found in fossil records with microevolutionary processes, such as genetic mutation and trait-selection.


Macroevolution is a process which takes a long time and is only visible in fossil records. Microevolution is, on the other hand is a process which is more rapid and is visible in living organisms. Microevolution is driven by genetic selection and mutation, which are smaller scales than macroevolution. It may also be increased through other mechanisms, like gene flow or horizontal gene transfer.

Evolution is based on chance

Evolutionists have used for years the argument that evolution is random. But this argument is flawed and it is important to know the reasons. The argument confuses randomness and contingency. This error stems from a misreading of the nature of biological contingency as described by Stephen Jay Gould. He believed that genetic information doesn't develop randomly, but is influenced by past events. He based his argument on the fact that DNA is a copy of genes, which are dependent on other molecules. In other terms there is a causality that is the basis of every biological process.

The argument is also flawed because of its reliance on the laws of physics and application of science. These statements are not only logically untenable and untrue, but also erroneous. Furthermore, the practice of science relies on a causal determinism that isn't enough to determine all natural events.

In his book, Brendan Sweetman aims to offer a balanced and accessible introduction to the relationship between evolutionary theory and Christian theism. He isn't a flashy author, but a thoughtful one, which fits his objectives that include detaching the scientific and implications for religion from evolutionary theory.

The book may not be as thorough as it could have been however it does provide a good overview of the debate. It also clarifies that evolutionary theories are well-substantiated, widely accepted and suitable for rational approval. The book isn't as convincing when it comes to whether God has any role in evolution.
