French Door Refrigerator With Ice Maker Review

Combining form and function, French-door refrigerators offer stylish double doors that open up to an expansive fridge on top and freezer drawer below. Special features such as through-the-door dispensers, high-end ice machines, and customizable flex drawers make them stand out from the rest.

We asked experts like Ladina Schopf, interior designer, architect, and founder of LS Projects, for tips on choosing the right model. They weighed storage capacity as well as layout and energy efficiency, among other features.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

As the name suggests, GE's Profile series targets the consumer who wants to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchen. This refrigerator has it all, from a Keurig K cup coffee maker in the door, to a clever dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Since this refrigerator costs more, I'd expect higher quality.

This fridge is a great choice, despite the small blip. It features a large freezer compartment which is uncommon for counter-depth French-door fridges. It also holds plenty of frozen food compared to other models.


The fridge is equipped with 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment offers 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is roughly on what you would expect from the size of a French door fridge costing this much. It has a decent-sized freezer in the left side. However, it's not the largest one I've seen.

You can adjust the shelving in each compartment to create a custom storage setup for what you want to store. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is attractive, too. Its LED lighting is a nice addition and the inside storage bins come with the third shelf, which folds down to allow you to store items that are tall. The drawers have temperature controls that let you set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, although I found their plastic textured coatings to be a bit difficult on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes all the features you'd expect from a refrigerator within this price range. This includes Wi-Fi as well as app support and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices allows you to control your fridge from anywhere in the world, and offers a ton of customization options. It also alerts you when doors are left open, when your fridge or freezer is in need of defrosting, and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill it's an option in a handful of other GE fridges that allow you to preset how many cups of water you'd like to pour out at a time. It does have a countdown on the fridge's display to show how much water you have left, but it's not as helpful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

It is designed to look like a seamless piece of your kitchen, Bosch's French-door refrigerator is an eye-catching piece. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a veggie compartment which keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer and dual compressors to preserve food. The ice maker we tested was one of the most efficient and makes pyramid shaped ice using minimal water. This refrigerator is a great option for households with a single member or kitchenettes looking for a built-in look and top of the line food preservation.

This fridge was rated the most efficient in our Refrigerators Test for a variety of reasons. The freezer temperature remained steady at just above 0° Fahrenheit and never fluctuated more than a fraction - this is essential to avoid freezing burn. The refrigerator section of the fridge also did well. It reached the initial temperature within an hour, and remained at that temperature throughout our testing.

Bosch is known for its top-quality appliances. Therefore, it's not a surprise that Bosch's counter depth fridge Bosch counter depth fridge can be connected to your home Wi Fi and Bosch's Home Connect. The app lets you monitor and manage your fridge remotely using your tablet or smartphone. The refrigerator is pricey and has great features and functions at a reasonable cost.

While the fridge is an incredible piece of equipment, it's important to know the limitations. It is possible to be inventive with tall items since the fridge is limited in shelf space. Additionally the shelves aren't completely sprillproof, and can easily be stained or damaged by sharp objects. The trays are easily removed from the fridge. However, they should be cleaned frequently to stop the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is a top counter-depth refrigerator that packs plenty of storage into a compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge is built with an ordinary French door design, and two rows of shelving with spill-capture and a set crisper drawers. The upper right shelf can be folded down to give tall items more headroom. There's also a full-width storage drawer for food items and an internal water dispenser.

This refrigerator is equipped with an ice maker, making it easy to move the ice when needed. The freezer also comes with innovative design features such as sliding drawers that help you sort your things. It also has a huge bin that can accommodate plenty of frozen food items as well as a separate container for storing ice.

Smart InstaView panel is a cool feature of the refrigerator. It lets you control the fridge's temperature, lighting, and more from your smartphone. It's a great way to monitor and manage your refrigerator, particularly if you're away from home.

However, while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it doesn't necessarily add to the overall performance of the refrigerator. This fridge took longer to defrost food and chill it than other models we tried. This could be due to the larger capacity.

Another issue with the door of this refrigerator. The handles that are sunken allow shorter people to open them from the bottom. However taller people will have a difficult time closing them without slamming. It would have been much better if they had a front-mounted handle.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a ideal option for those looking to combine the advantages of a fridge with a French door with an efficient layout. Its capacity is superior for a counter-depth model and it cools evenly and has a great layout. It's also a little cheaper than the top counter-depth refrigerator with an ice maker, which can make it a desirable choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good choice when you're looking for a French door fridge that doesn't break the budget. It's a minimalist design that isn't as striking in appearance as other models however it comes with enough features to make it a good choice. french door refrigerator freezer is the adjustable temperature drawer, which helps keep foods like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also has a large ice maker as well as a water dispenser.

Another feature that is worth mentioning is the "Chill Drawer" that sits over the two crisper bins. The drawer lets you redirect a portion of the fridge's cooling power to the area so that you can store foods which need extra attention. You can alter the feature using the slider located on the in the middle of the drawer. You can also alter the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've noticed that the generic settings are more effective than the specific ones.

In my experiments, I noticed that the temperatures in the refrigerator were fairly consistent in different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the middle, top and bottom of the refrigerator did not differ significantly from 38 degrees. This is a great performance however it doesn't be among the top in our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also connect this fridge to an intelligent thermometer to get more precise readings of the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made from grey-bodied stainless with a "smudge proof" finish. It blocks streaks and fingerprints better than other stainless steel finishes I've tried.
