The Band Toto Asia

Toto expanded its production facilities overseas, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an area of growth for Washlet toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure that the next generation would be able to read them. Many words were replaced with foreign ones. For example, dui, which is Bengali for verandah was being used.

Origins

Toto's early history which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the first half of its existence, the company manufactured goods to meet demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. To achieve this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the country to make ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.

In the late 1980s the company began to expand outwards to take advantage of sales and new markets. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other products of manufacturers to complement its own lines of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy boosted sales and increased the firm's market share.

In the 90s, Toto began to focus on research and development for water-related appliances. It also redesigned its distribution system to better serve customers and boost profits. The company used the same approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a greater level of satisfaction of customers.

Toto continued to develop toilet technology. Its latest toilet has a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. The company makes use of recycled water for its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets Toto manufactures bathtubs and faucets, as well as hand dryers that are more efficient in terms of energy consumption than standard models.

The company's first museum opened in the year 2015 and features exhibits on Toto's seminal products and their evolution and its group companies (all having to do with ceramics) and the history of plumbing and products such as bath units, and in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. ??? ??? with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.

Before the formation of Toto members of the group performed sessions with various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

You would expect a group with a name like Asia to be a prog band however, it's actually a pretty straightforward rock outfit. The band started out as a group and recorded two albums - 1979's self-titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. But even though the band have a diverse musical background, their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a massive blockbuster but not without its issues. Record companies put the band on place with the directive "give us an album that's a smash or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on them to meet the deadline. Luckily for Toto they did, with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their previous experience since the members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their sonic signature has become the norm for pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

The album opens up hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. The album also includes some jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distorted AOR and could sound like a complete flop, but is incredibly effective.

After Toto IV the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career and the band had a variety of drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The band managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Steve Lukather has forged a colorful, deep friendship with Joe Williams that is flourishing professionally around the world. In 2018, the duo celebrated 40 years of Tours Around The Sun by a hugely profitable global tour. The album that bears the same name reached #5 on Billboard 200. The new tour of the band includes their best hits and rarely live cuts, as well as some of the songs from Lukather and Williams their individual catalogs.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a classic sextet format and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was as well more refined, more precise and less akin to earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded their Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after and embarked on a tour around the world to help promote the album. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was released in the form of a double-album called Then & Now in 2001. It was the band's first album that did not contain a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the group. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
