Evolution Korea

Korean scientists don't take any chances when it comes to the fight over evolution. The Society for Textbook Revise (STR) has been fighting to have the Archaeopteryx and horses removed from textbooks, claiming they are typical icons of evolutionism.

Confucian traditions with their emphasis on the importance of success in the world and the high value of education still dominate the culture of the country. However, Korea is looking for an alternative model of development.

Origins

The growth of Iron Age culture brought more sophisticated states such as Goguryeo Baekje and Silla to the Korean peninsula. They all developed a distinct culture which blended with the influence of their powerful neighbours and also embraced various aspects of Chinese culture, including Confucianism and Buddhism, although shamanism continued to be practised too.

Goguryeo was the first of these kingdoms to establish its own form of government on the Korean people. It consolidated its power in the 1st century and established a king-centered governing system by the beginning of the 2nd century. It expanded its territory to Manchuria and the northern part of the Peninsula by an array of wars that drove the Han loyalists from the area.

It was during this period that a regional confederation was formed known as Buyeo. In the Samguk yusa of the 13th century Wang Geon's name was recorded as king. Buyeo was later referred to as Goryeo and that is how the name Korea was born. Goryeo was a thriving commercial and economic system and was also a center for learning. They raised sheep, goats and other animals and created furs from them. They wrote poetry and masked dance-dramas like sandaenori and tallori and celebrated an annual festival known as Yeonggo in December.

Goryeo’s economy was boosted through the brisk trade, which included the Song Dynasty in China. Traders from Central Asia, Arabia, Southeast Asia and Japan came to Byeongnando the gateway to the capital city of Gaeseong. The items they brought were medicinal herbs and silk.

Around 8,000 BCE the Koreans began establishing permanent settlements and cultivating cereal crops. They also developed polished pottery, stone tools, and began to organize themselves into clan societies. The Neolithic Age lasted until the 12th century BC. At the time, Gija, a Shang dynasty prince from China is believed to have introduced high culture to Korea. Many Koreans believed, right up to the 20th century that Gija and Dangun gave Korea their people and their basic culture.

Functions

Korea's previous model of development, which was based on state-led capital accumulation, government intervention in industry and business as well as a rapid economic growth that took it from being one of the most deprived countries in the world to the ranks of OECD nations in just three decades. However, this model was fraught with moral hazard and corruption that was outright which made it unsustainable in a global economy of trade liberalization, openness and democratic change.

The current crisis has revealed the weakness of the old paradigm, and it's likely that an alternative model will emerge to replace it. The main conclusion is that there are a variety of emerging trends that are altering the nature of power and will determine the future of the country. In spite of the fact that participation in politics in Korea is still extremely limited new forms of democracy are emerging that override political parties and challenge them, thus changing the system of democracy in Korea.

Another important point is that the power and influence of the Korean elite has decreased. A large section of the society feels disconnected from the ruling class. This is a sign of the need for greater civic involvement and education as well as new models of power sharing. The chapter concludes by saying that the success of Korea's new model of development will be determined by how these trends can be incorporated and if people are willing to make difficult choices.

Benefits

South Korea is the world's ninth largest economy, and the sixth fastest growing. It has a large and growing middle class and also a strong research and development base that drives innovation. The government has also recently increased its investments in infrastructure projects to boost the growth of the economy and encourage social equity.

It made efforts to streamline the government organization, privatize public corporations equipped with higher efficiency, and to overhaul administrative regulations.

Since the conclusion of the Cold War, South Korea is pursuing a strategy for the integration of its economy with the rest and beyond the region. Exports of high-tech consumer electronics and advanced manufacturing technologies have become an important source of income. Additionally the government has been encouraging the Saemaeul Undong (New Community Movement) initiative, which has transformed the country from an agricultural one to one that is that is focused on manufacturing.

The country has a high quality of life and provides numerous benefits to its employees, including maternity leave and job stability. Employers are also required to purchase to accident insurance, which provides the cost of workplace-related illnesses or injuries. It is also common for companies to provide private medical insurance which provides insurance for illnesses not covered by National Health Insurance.

South Korea is viewed as a success model for many developing countries across the globe. However, the global financial crisis that swept through Asia in 1997 challenged this notion. The crisis challenged the myths about Asia's miracle economies, and prompted an entirely new understanding of the role of governments in managing risky private activities.

Disadvantages

The reemergence of the creationists is a major obstacle to Korean science's efforts to educate the public about evolution. The majority of Koreans are in favor of teaching students about evolution, but a small group led by Bun-Sam Liu (the director of the Society for Textbook Revise, STR) is pushing for the removal of evolution from textbooks. STR claims that teaching evolution promotes "atheist materialism" and paints an "unhopeful" worldview for students, which can cause students to lose faith in humanity.

The reasons behind this anti-evolutionary sentiment are a bit ambiguous and varied. Some researchers suggest that it is due to religious belief, while others point to an increasing prevalence of anti-intellectualism, which has been exacerbated by growing political elite fragmentation along ideologies, regions, class, and gender. In addition the one-sidedness of the government, supported by powerful conservative business interests and think tanks which has led to public disdain for the scientific community.

In the final analysis the study's findings about the widespread vulnerability highlight the need for targeted policy interventions that can mitigate them preemptively. As Seoul continues to pursue its ambition of becoming a more cohesive urban landscape, these findings can be used to inspire an unifying push for greater inclusivity in its policies.

In the case of the COVID-19 pandemic, pinpointing vulnerable neighborhoods and their occupants is crucial to develop detailed, empathetic policy measures to ensure their safety and wellbeing. To overcome this, South Korea needs a more inclusive civil society that can bring all communities together to address the city's biggest challenges. This requires a fundamental change in the structure and power of the institution of politics. These agencies aren't subject to oversight by institutions of the parliament or independent inspectors. This gives the president enormous power to force his or her vision on the rest of the country. This recipe can result in polarization and stagnation of the country.
