Keyless Entry System


Keyless entry systems can make your car more convenient to drive and help with security by permitting you to open the doors and start the engine without reaching for your keys. Modern cars feature systems which automatically lock the car when you've walked away from it, which can be useful if you tend to forget things or are worried about leaving your vehicle unattended. These systems aren't without their weaknesses. For example, thieves could hack into these systems.

There are a variety of issues that could cause your keyless entry and remote starter to not work properly. The most frequent issue is a dead battery in your key fob. You can replace the battery if that is the cause. If this fails to fix the issue, you might require having your fob changed to a different program.

Keyless Start System

With this technology, drivers can start their engines without having to insert a mechanical key. The fob instead transmits an access key to the console which unlocks a set of electrical switches that start the engine. The system also comes with security measures to stop the car from accidentally starting in gear or when someone isn't in close proximity to the steering column. Newer key fobs use RFID (radio-frequency identification) to communicate with the computer of the vehicle. The key fob transmits an electronic code and the car computer stores it so that the key can be opened and start your car.

The key fobs emit a signal on the same frequency as a cellphone and this technology is utilized to remotely turn on certain car systems like lift gates to power or to start a vehicle's engine from outside the car. Fobs can also trigger an attention-grabbing blare to frighten off thieves and other unwanted guests.

Batteries are the most common reason for an unresponsive key fob. If this is the scenario, changing the fob's program is done by following some simple steps.

Immobilizer

The Immobilizer as you guess from its name, stops the vehicle from beginning without the key fob. The system utilizes LF (low-frequency 125 kHz) transmitting antennas that are activated when the key fob is either pressed or its handle is pulled. The transponder chip inside the key fob then transmits the ID back to vehicle. The module that knows about the vehicle's identity checks the ID of the key fob with the BCM and should the two match, the vehicle will begin.

This system is very effective at deterring most carjackers, though it does not protect against the more technologically-advanced thieves. In a recent report security researcher Bokslag managed to hack three popular immobilizers of car brands within ten seconds of receiving the keys.

Most older vehicles use a simpler, less-reliable version of this system, with a single, permanent personal code and a revolving second code that's read each time the key is turned on. Newer vehicles use an advanced, electronically-controlled Engine Immobilizer system that features two-tier security.

In order to reprogramme an authorized key, it is necessary to know the 7-digit SKC (Skip Key Code) number for the specific vehicle you own. This number is obtained from the Dealership when you purchase your new Key Fob. You will also require the Workshop Code and Importer number. The Immobilizer system is typically not affected by a battery disconnect however, the Transponder ECU on the Key Fob will need to be reprogrammed through the OBDII port using the appropriate diagnostic tools.
