Evolution Korea

In the past, the Korean scientific community avoided working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no anymore an option.

The STR has been campaigning to eliminate content from textbooks that explain evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. But this is merely one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which may result in changes to genes or even whole genomes. These changes can, over generations result in the development of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is natural selection, which describes the process by which individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. As time passes, this difference in reproduction could result in the creation of entirely new species.

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has had many different meanings over the years as it has taken form in the fields of science and other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species changed into other species in a predetermined fashion. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival, or their ability to reproduce offspring. In time, genetic variation can cause a population develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Such a variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary change. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed down to future generations.


Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial even though it has been proven accurate by thousands of scientific tests and it has been tested over time. They claim that the concept should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high school textbooks, including the removal of any mention of the evolutionary origins of humans and the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestral bird's parent.

Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?

???? ???? explains how the Earth and all living species came to be. It also serves as a basis of biology and helps scientists understand how living organisms work and grow. Evolution also reveals the relationships between species. Scientists study evolution in order to better comprehend nature and make important discoveries such as new drugs.

The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so much about the universe and life on this planet, and it has been rigorously tested and verified over a long period of time. Many people, and even religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology doesn't contradict religious beliefs because it only deals with physical objects, events, and processes.

Many religious people have discovered a way to reconcile evolution with their convictions. For example certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution, and that humans share an ancestry with other animals.

It is essential that science educators advocate for the teaching evolution. In some countries, the anti-evolution movement has been growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is a campaign for textbook content on the evolutionary history of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

It is vital to remember, however, that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this belief vary. Certain scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as developing new drugs or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve the lives of animals and plant species, usually for the benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, while others have a profound religious belief in God and are seeking to know how the universe functions.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Although not all creationists are Christian but they are a majority. Creationists typically fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most common type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way that is described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of six days of creation was true and that the universe and the life on Earth were created only recently.

OECs are less well known, but they are as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a lie.

Both types of creationism deny that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought resisted miracles in fear that they could lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their view "theistic evolution." It is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." In this theory, God creates the original species, and then allows them to evolve over time. In the end these evolutionary changes will create new species that are like the original ones.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event known as the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the species of the beginning were created at the same time and then gradually evolved. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. This position is supported by a myriad of professional associations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would remove references to evolution from their editions. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. STR has secured its first victory in eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx in textbooks. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution, too.

STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints an unflattering image for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of students in biology found that half did not believe in evolution. The reasons aren't evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and an ebook. One of these was a textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. This sparked an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. ???? ??? is still taught to students today.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR and its members have been giving lectures on creation science in major seminaries as well. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
