Evolution Korea

For a long time the Korean scientific community was hesitant about working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no any longer an option.

The STR has been campaigning to get rid of textbooks that discuss evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. But this is merely one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?


The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environment, which can cause variations in genes, or even entire genomes. Over the course of many generations these changes could result in the emergence of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which describes the process through which people with advantages survive and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. Over time, this differential reproduction may lead to the development of entirely new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word"evolution" which means unraveling or revealing, however the concept has had a variety of meanings over the years as it has taken form in the fields of science and in other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist student who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

More recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can lead a population to develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the most evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like the growth in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not inherited by the next generation.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and a multitude of scientific studies however, creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of references to the evolutionary roots of humans and Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?

Evolution explains the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also a foundation of biology, and aids scientists comprehend how living organisms operate and grow. Evolution also demonstrates how different species are connected. Scientists study evolution in order to better understand nature and make useful discoveries, such as the development of new drugs.

The evidence for biological evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains as much about the universe as the life on this planet. It has been thoroughly examined and confirmed for many years. Many people, including some religious leaders, are in favor of the theory of evolution as a scientific fact. It is important to understand that evolutionary biology does not contradict religious beliefs, since the theory only deals with processes, objects, and events within the physical world.

In reality many religious people have found ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolution. For example certain Christians believe that God created the world through evolution, and that humans share an ancestry with other animals.

It is important for scientists to support the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in some nations around the world the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the elimination of textbook content on the evolution of horses as well as the avian ancestral Archaeopteryx.

While these are disturbing developments, it is important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

The most popular type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is literal and that the universe and the life on Earth was created only recently.

OECs are not as well-known, but they are just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a myth.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible because it would require an extraordinary event, and that the scientists who founded modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their position "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." This theory states that God creates the original species and then allows them to change over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species that are similar to the original.

Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in one event, called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all the original species were created at the same moment and that they gradually evolved. They reject the concept of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.

In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by numerous professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some academic institutions and scientists are more flexible, and allow the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their books. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. STR has achieved its first victory in eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. The next step is to take out the finch-research of Darwin's famed and also on human evolution.

STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. The goal, according to STR, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an unflattering image for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that half of them didn't believe in evolution. The causes aren't clear but could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR has achieved many things in the past through seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences, with an evolutionary perspective that sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 7 and 8 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
