Replacement Handles For Windows

Double-glazed windows are a common feature. As time passes, they may get rusty or worn out.

To replace a UPVC window handle, you have to know the spindle length of the handle you have currently and its fixings. The best method to do this is to examine the base of the handle you have previously replaced.

Handle

Over time, uPVC window handles and locks can become damaged due to wear and tear, accidental or intentional damage. It is possible that the handle or lock becomes difficult to open or close or not locked at all. It's tempting to replace your entire window unit when this happens, but it is not always necessary. Most of the time, it's the case that a replacement handle or lock will suffice.

The most common type of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette style. The handle comes with a spindle that protrudes from the handle. It fits into a gearbox, which controls the multipoint locking mechanism inside the window. It is crucial to match the appropriate handle and lock to your windows to ensure that they work correctly. That's why we stock a wide variety of replacement handles for all kinds of uPVC windows.

It is recommended, when replacing the handle of a uPVC handle, to use screw covers to protect the screws from rust and ensure they remain secure. Alternatively, Repair My Windows And Doors to make use of a spacer or washer to ensure a better seal. Having a screw cap in place will also prevent water and debris from getting into the handle and damaging the handle.

After the handle has been removed from the window it's an ideal idea to scrub the spindle of the new handle, and also the threaded section of the bolt. This will make sure that the new handle is able to fit and function correctly, and will also help to stop dirt from entering the multipoint lock.

Next it's time to install the new uPVC handle. Be sure to go through the directions that come with your new handle. You can also review the previous one to get a better idea of how to do it. Usually, the process is simple. If you run into any issues not addressed in this guide, we suggest contact our team for more details.

It's also important to note that if you're replacing a uPVC handle with a cockspur (also called an Espag handle) you will need to examine the step height of the window in order to determine the proper size of handle. The step height is the distance between the base of the window and the point where the handles of the cockspur are.

Hinges

The hinges might not be aligned with the frame of your window if your windows start to close and open with a visible space. This is usually a simple fix that can be solved with a new set of replacement window hinges. We offer a range of different options, and can even customise the dimensions of the hinges to meet your needs.

We can provide a variety of hinges for Upvc and timber windows. They are available in a variety of colors to fit with your existing window frames and include all fixings needed for fitting. If you have a double-glazed window with an older style of hinge, we can also offer a selection of repair screw kits which permit you to cut the thread back into the frame.

We offer a range of different hinge types, from standard casement window hinges that can be used with a standard or tilt and turn handle, through to fire escape egress hinges for use on larger side hung windows. These hinges are designed to open fully in an urgent situation and come with an easy-cleaning feature. We also carry hinges with restricted-egress, which are designed to restrict the opening angle of a window to 100mm maximum. This is perfect for households with children.

Squeaky hinges can be a sign that the hinges are wearing out, this is often due to the friction of metal against. If the noise is still present then a small amount of lubricant will aid.

This is due to plumb windows being able to avoid optional binding. The operating sash is aligned with the frame and the window will close and open properly. If a window is not plumb, it could have issues opening and closing or become stretched over time, which can cause problems with the seal and appearance of the window.

When purchasing replacement upvc window hinges be aware that they can be purchased in imperial or the metric sizes. The metric sizes tend to be a little more precise, but it's not noticeable once they are put in. The first corner fixing holes on the track and arm are of a standard size, however the other holes can vary in length depending on the original hardware. We recommend that you measure the hole spacings on your existing frame prior to purchasing any upvc hinges to ensure that they are the correct dimensions.

Crank

Normal wear and tear over time can result in damage to the window handle, lock or crank mechanism. This can affect the ease of opening and closing your windows as well as compromising their security. If you notice that your window is hard to open or close, or if you hear a click when turning the handle, it could be an indication that you have to replace the crank mechanism. If you are unable to secure your window or the multipoint lock is broken, it may also be worth looking into replacing this component of the hardware as well.

It's easy to replace the window crank with minimum effort. However, it's crucial that you purchase the correct size replacement. Ensure that the replacement is the same height as your old one, which can be determined by measuring the distance between the guide for the crank arm bushing and the notch in the track that runs across the bottom of the window frame. Alternatively, you can take a measurement of the length of the spindle that is on your existing handle to determine what size you will need for a replacement.

The type of window handle you own will determine which kind of crank mechanism you need for your casement or awning windows. Espag handles are equipped with a mental spindle on the back that is connected to the frame of the window and is the motor for the window mechanism while cockspur handle have pegs which are fixed to the frame by screws of three or four which are fixed to the sash and frame.

It's easy to replace your window operator after you've identified the correct replacement. First, remove any trim mounting screws on the window's casement cover and then carefully lift it off to reveal the insides of the window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new lever to the old one and remove any rusted trim screw. Then, attach the replacement to the window frame, replace any screws that were damaged or bent, and then place the casement cover on top of the mechanism.
