Types of Ovens

Hobs are the center of any kitchen, no matter if you're boiling a kettle or roasting chicken. They come in a range of sizes and styles and there are different hob types to choose from including gas, electric, ceramic and domino.

Electric hobs have smooth surfaces and are easy to clean, however they require a bit of time to heat up or cool down. They are also only compatible with flat-bottomed pans, and may include heat indicators.

Ceramic Hobs

Ceramic hobs have revolutionised the way we cook, offering an elegant and fashionable look whilst remaining easy to use. The ceramic hobs function using heating elements beneath the glass surface that is tempered to distribute heat evenly and quickly across your cookware. Ceramic hobs come in a variety of designs, ranging from traditional electric and gas burners to more modern designs. They are generally equipped with black glazed surfaces which is durable and resistant to chips and scratches.

The smooth flat surfaces of these hobs are easy to clean and wipe down in one go. You can even use the majority of standard kitchen cleaner products. They do not contain open flames, which means they are safe for families with elderly relatives or children. They usually have control knobs that are rotary or touch for safety, and a residual temperature indicator which alerts you when a zone remains hot after removing the pan from the stove.

They cost more than electric hobs, however, they are less expensive than induction models. They are a good option for those who don't have gas in their home. Like best hobs are more efficient than other kinds of hobs, but only if your cookware has a flat base that maximises the surface contact with the elements. The heating system won't recognize pots and pans that aren't exactly the same size as the element.

It is crucial to hire a licensed electrician install your ceramic hob, as working with electricity is risky if it's not done properly. In addition, if you don't have your ceramic cooktop professionally installed could void the warranty and cause potential fire dangers in the future. It's a small price to pay for peace of mind and ensuring that your new cooktop is safe for use.

Gas Hobs

A gas hob, or a gas cooktop, is powered by natural or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and typically installed in your kitchen unit or countertop. It has a variety of burners which can be lit manually with matches or lighters, and are controlled by knobs that allow you to manage the heat level while cooking. The main advantage of gas hobs is that they give instant heat as opposed to electric models and can be used for any style of cooking, from simmering and boiling to sauteing or frying.

Gas hobs have the disadvantage of requiring a ventilation and gas supply system for operation. This makes them more expensive to install and may not be as efficient as induction hobs. Hobs made of gas are also dangerous because they use gas that is flammable and require regular maintenance to look for leaks.

Induction hobs are another popular choice. They use electromagnetic technology to heat directly your pans. This allows them to boil water quicker than gas models and also provide precise temperature control. However, they only use pans that are compatible with induction and can be a little more expensive than some other types of hobs.

Other options include a glass ceramic hob that has a sleek appearance and is easy to clean. This kind of hob is available in both induction and electric models. It's an excellent choice for those who wish to design an elegant and modern kitchen. It is important to note that this type of stove can become very hot to the touch and takes longer to cool and heat down compared to gas or electric models.

A freestanding gas stove or hob is a more traditional option that's ideal for homes with larger kitchens and open-plan designs where it can serve as the focal point. It requires a designated space and is installed by professionals. Gas connections can be risky if not handled properly.

Hobs Induction

A popular choice for those looking for a sleek and efficient way to cook, induction hobs use electromagnetic induction technology to warm pans. In the glass surface, there are coils that when a pan that is compatible is placed on the top of them emit a magnetic field which causes an electrical current to run through the base of the pan. This creates heat that quickly warms the food within, while the cooktop itself remains cool to the touch.

Induction hobs are also recognized for being much more efficient in energy use than traditional electric or gas models. Because they produce heat directly where a pan is situated, this reduces the amount of residual heat that is wasted. It can also help reduce energy costs. A majority of induction hobs come with the safety feature of shutting the appliance off if there is no pan detected or when it is removed. This can reduce the amount of energy wasted.

Similar to gas hobs, induction models are equipped with various types of controls that include dial, slide and touchscreen controls. The slider control is like a standard knob on a cooker and allows you to adjust the power level with a simple motion. Dial controls are similar to standard knobs, and feature a large dial that can be rotated to select the desired setting. Touchscreen hobs are another option, usually found on more expensive and sophisticated induction models. They feature an enlightened digital display that makes it easy to read and adjust settings.

Induction hobs are available with extractors integrated that work in conjunction with the hood in order to eliminate steam and smoke from the kitchen, and to prevent condensation and mould. They can be operated independently from the other appliances and are usually activated by sensors or buttons and can be set to automatically switch on when a pot is placed on an area for cooking.

The major drawback of induction hobs is that they require a particular type of cookware to function. It is required for the bottom of the pan to have a magnetized base in order to be able generate the electromagnetic process. However it is not guaranteed to work on all models. Cast iron, stainless-steel that has magnetized bases and certain nonstick pans can be used with induction stoves. However, you should always consult the manufacturer to make sure that your pan is compatible before purchasing a model.

Domino Hobs

The versatility of a domino hob is ideal for those who have smaller kitchens but want to experiment with cooking styles. With two zones of ceramic, gas and induction domino stoves available and even a griddle option offered by Siemens, you can mix and combine to create a modular cooking space that is suited to your needs.

Solid plate hobs are the most basic kind of hobs. They use sealed plates made of metal to heat electrical elements, which then create heat for your cookware. They are affordable, simple to use and hard-wearing. They can take a long time to cool down and heat, and are more expensive to run than other kinds of hobs.

A popular alternative to solid plate hobs is the halogen model which uses a row of glowing halogen bulbs set on the glass ceramic surface to generate heat. This type of hob is swift and responsive because the bulbs are bright and transfer heat directly into the pan. However, halogen hobs can be prone to damage due to scraping against the hard-wearing surface, as well as being less energy efficient than other types of hob.

Induction hobs are a brand new and becoming increasingly popular type of stove, making use of electromagnetic technology to heat the cooking zones rather than the surface. They are more cost effective and environmentally friendly than other hob types However, they can be more expensive than gas and will require specific induction compatible cookware.

Ceramic hobs are a fashionable and contemporary option, with their flat design that blends seamlessly into the worktops to add the appearance of a kitchen with a fluid. The surface is easy to clean and doesn't require any special cleaning products. Some models have a stylish frameless appearance and can be customized using dials or touch controls, depending on your preferences.

When purchasing a new stove, make sure you look for features such as overheat protection. This turns off the heating element when it gets to a dangerous temperature. Also, look for residual heat indicators, which will inform you when your hob is too hot to contact and could cause burns. A pause feature allows you to temporarily deactivate all active cooking zones and can be helpful if you have to leave the kitchen for a time.
