CAMHS ADHD Assessment


If your child or adolescent has difficulty, they may be sent for an ADHD assessment by CAMHS. They will usually be asked to bring with them their parent(s)/guardian(s) and a teacher who knows them well.

Parents and caregivers who were interviewed in response COVID-19 have highlighted the advantages of remote appointments, but also said that face-to-face appointments are preferred during assessments.

Signs and symptoms

If your child or young person you know is suffering from ADHD, they might have trouble sitting still or forgetting things, experience trouble falling asleep, and are easily distracted by extraneous stimuli. They may also struggle to keep up with tasks or activities at school or home and have difficulty understanding information and may find it difficult to follow directions. They might lose things and have trouble finishing homework or assignments and may have trouble keeping appointments. If they're not careful, they might cause harm to themselves or others. They might experience difficulties in relationships, and find it hard to find jobs or jobs, and have difficulty being a good parent.

Diagnosis

ADHD is a medical condition and can be treated with medications, behavioural therapy, or education. It can be difficult for parents and children to understand the disorder however there is plenty of help available. If you think you or your child has symptoms of ADHD talk to an GP. They can refer you to a specialist CAMHS team that will evaluate your child's condition and make a diagnosis.

If your child was referred to CAMHS ADHD Assessment Service you will be visited by at least one member of the team. They will also ask for feedback from the child as well as their parent(s) or carer(s), and the teacher who knows them well. The team will use standardised assessments and detailed histories to evaluate your child's needs. They will also distribute Conners questionnaires to the child, their parent(s) or guardian(s) as well as an educator who is familiar with the child to complete prior to the assessment appointment.

The CAMHS team will then determine that your child requires further tests and they will refer them to an expert clinical psychologist. The psychologist will conduct different tests to see how your child manages their emotions and behaves in different situations. They will look at the behavior of your child in a range of different situations, such as at home, school and public places.

Treatment

You will be asked to write about your symptoms, and how they impact your life. They may also speak to your teachers, parents, or other caregivers. Recent reports2 have revealed the issue of lengthy wait times for CAMHS services. Even with top-quality treatment, waiting times for ADHD assessments can be very long. While national guidelines3 and local transformation plans4 emphasise the importance of early detection of children and young adults with ADHD, and guidance on assessment has been provided however there is no clear guidelines regarding how long the child or young person should wait to be seen.

This quality improvement (QI) project was created to reduce waiting times for the ADHD assessment process. This was accomplished by using a simple data collection tool and integrating it into the clinical system. This has enabled the average time from the time of referral until the date of the ADHD assessment feedback to be reduced. The QI team would like to also thank City and Hackney CAMHS ADHD for their commitment and hard work throughout this project.

The project involved 12 participants who were recently referred to the CAMHS ADHD pathway within a local Trust. Interviews were semi-structured and conducted via phone. Participants were recruited via an intentional sampling technique. This method was chosen because it is considered to be more ethical than the randomised controlled trial method that is normally used for a research study.

The team consulted with service users throughout the assessment process and identified key themes that informed improvements to the process. For instance, service users, felt that the assessment was too long and that there was not enough post-assessment support. Additionally they would like to see more targeted assistance for families and children who are diagnosed with ADHD.

In the wake of the QI project, wait times between referral and ADHD evaluation have been reduced significantly. This is in line the trust-level targets, and reflects an emphasis on enhancing effectiveness and capacity across the CAMHS System. The team employed a change model and Plan-Do–Study–Act cycles to drive positive changes in the ADHD process.

A diagnosis of ADHD could also assist you to get an Education, Health and Care Plan for your child. The EHCP will allow your school to put in place additional support for your child, for example medication or training courses.
