Certain microwave oven combos come with a swing-out right-to-left door or drop-down models that open the same way as traditional ovens. There is also an oven and microwave that opens in a drawer, similar to a cabinet. Microwave drawers are easy to reach and are perfect for small spaces where you need to avoid taking up valuable counter space. Combination microwaves can also provide various features that help make meal prep easier and more practical. When choosing a microwave oven combination, make sure to think about how often you'll be using each function. If you'll be using the oven component of your combination more often than the microwave, you may be better off using a double wall oven instead. A combo oven has less capacity than an oven that is a standalone unit. Once you've selected the best microwave and oven combo for your requirements, you need to think about the installation. Over-the-range models can be positioned over the stove or cooktop and plug into an electrical outlet, while built in microwaves are installed directly into the cabinets or walls of your kitchen. Energy Efficiency A built in microwave oven combination can be an excellent space-saving option for those who have smaller kitchens, regardless of whether they reside in a house or apartment. They can save the space in cabinets that would be taken up by two separate appliances, and they can also help to reduce energy consumption. They usually provide an efficient cooking method than traditional wall ovens because they use less energy. They can also be used to cook food or warm food items. This eliminates the need for other appliances like toasters or warming plates. In evaluating the possibility of amending energy conservation standards, DOE conducts several analyses which include assessment of technology and market conditions screening analysis, engineering analysis and a national impact analysis (NIA). For this SNOPR, DOE will rely on its existing engineering analysis of microwave ovens to determine the best level of efficiency improvements that are technically feasible for this product category. DOE will assess the design of a microwave to an energy performance objective that is specified in the engineering analysis. The engineering analysis will then determine the maximum improvement in energy efficiency that is technologically feasible based on the most advanced microprocessor-controlled model available on the market or in working prototypes, or the maximum reduction in energy consumption that is technically achievable with the current technologies available for this product class. As part of the NIA, DOE will evaluate the effects on consumers for every product category, including lifecycle cost savings and simple payback periods ("PBP"). DOE will employ its Government Regulatory Impact Model with an adaptation for microwave ovens to calculate the industry's net present value ("NPV"). DOE will also assess the effects on manufacturers and will use a modified industry cash flow model adapted to this product type to estimate manufacturing NPV. Additionally, DOE will consider the potential impacts on small business manufacturers as well as other subgroups of manufacturers to identify any that could be disproportionally affected by these proposals. Additionally, DOE will consider whether the testing procedures for microwave ovens should be updated to include active mode energy use and an integrated active mode energy use measurement. The current test procedures only address standby mode power use. Design Microwaves generate heat by causing water molecules vibrate in food. Wall ovens are based on the circulation of hot air while microwaves rely on waves to cause food molecules to vibrate. Combination wall units combine both appliances into one unit, saving space in the kitchen and providing a modern and sleek design. It is important to consider your budget and goals before investing in a combination wall oven. Several of the combination wall ovens that we've rated have issues with performance or design.
