Pragmatics and Semantics

Many modern philosophical perspectives focus on semantics. Brandom for instance, focuses on the meaning of words (albeit from a pragmatic viewpoint).

Others take a more holistic approach to pragmatics, such as relevance theory, which seeks to understand the processes involved in an utterance made by a listener. But this approach tends to neglect other elements of pragmatism, such as epistemic debates over truth.

What is the definition of pragmatism?

Pragmatism provides a different perspective to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. It was conceived by Charles Sanders Peirce and expanded by his friend and colleague William James, and later developed by Josiah Royce. It was influential in a variety of areas of inquiry ranging from philosophy of science to theology however, it also found its place in the philosophy of ethics and politics, philosophy of language, aesthetics, and social theory. The pragmatic maxim is at the center of classical pragmatism. It is a principle that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses by examining their 'practical implications', or their implications for the experiences of particular situations. Pragmatists also developed a variety of theories and methods, including those in semiotics and philosophy of language. They also study areas such as philosophy of religion, philosophy and theology, ethics, and science. Some, such as Peirce and Royce are epistemological relativists, whereas others argue that such relativism is seriously misguided. The late 20th century saw the resurgence of interest in classical pragmatics. This led to a myriad of new developments. This includes a "near-side" pragmatics which is concerned with the resolution of ambiguity, indexicals, demonstratives and anaphors, as well as a "far-side" pragmatics that looks at the semantics in discourses.

Semantics and Pragmatics are often seen as being at opposite ends of a continuum with semantics on the close side and pragmatics on the far side. Despite these difficulties the pragmatism movement continues to grow in its popularity throughout the world. It is an important third option in comparison to the continental and analytic philosophical traditions and has numerous practical applications. It is a rapidly growing field of study. Many schools of thought have emerged and incorporated pragmatism elements in their own philosophy.
