Choosing Upvc Window Replacement Hinges

It's not as difficult as it could seem to choose and fit Upvc replacement hinges. Make sure that the arrows on the hinges face the right way and then measure the thickness of the hinge arms on the opening frame (13mm or 17mm).

There are many different kinds of hinges, each having their distinctive characteristics. This article will discuss the most popular uPVC hinges, and their benefits.

Egress/Easy Clean Hinge

These windows are an excellent choice to replace or upgrade your fire escape safety window as they open to a full 90-degree angle. They can also be removed to an 'easy clean' position to allow you to easily access the exterior of your windows to clean them without having to climb a ladder or lean over at potentially dangerous angles.

These heavy duty egress hinges are made by Yale, one of the most well-known and trusted home security brands available today. These hinges can be used with any type of uPVC side hung window. They can be moved to the easy-to-clean position by pressing in an unassuming button, and then moving the window sash to one side. When the sash is closed, it will automatically reset to its original position.

Both 13mm and 17mm are both available. Based on the size of your existing window, we suggest using our Egress Selection Guide to determine which product is best for you.

These hinges are compatible with traditional side-hung frames made from aluminum or uPVC. They come with an easy-to-use friction screw to alter the amount of resistance that is generated. This makes opening the window easier and reduces the chances of a mistaken closing in strong winds. They have been tested to more than 30000 cycles and are in compliance with BBA/Secured by Design and British Standards approved BS EN 13126-6:2008.

The Nico Egress Easy Clean friction hinge is simple to use and has no buttons or catch. upvc door hinge adjustment offers a convenient and safe solution for emergency exit and cleaning. Firstly, open the window to the egress (full opening) position and then press the hinge retaining clip that is located on the inner side of the bottom corner. This will release both the bottom and top catches allowing you slide the sash to the clean position. Close the window after you are in the easy-cleaning position. This will set the hinges back to their exit positions.

Fire-Escape Hinge

Fire Escape Hinges, often known as "Easy Clean" hinges are used to replace side opening windows to allow egress (fire safety) reasons. These hinges allow for an opening larger in the event of fire. Building regulations stipulate that this kind of hinge has to be set in any room that has windows.

They feature a unique friction stay that opens the window to 90 degrees and allows the opening sash to slide across the glass when it is open for easy cleaning of the external side of the glass without having to use ladders. The hinges are easy to operate and do not have complicated buttons or catchers. They can be operated from inside of the house using an easy, safe lever.

The hinges, made in the UK by Cotswold are fitted with the safety of children in daily use. This can be removed using a hidden button. You will have peace of assurance that your children will not accidentally open the windows too wide. The stack heights are 13mm or 17mm.

Take a measurement of the length of the current side-hung window hinge that is fixed to the frame. (See the article on measuring the size of Upvc window hinges). Choose the proper size hinge from the list below.

Please note that the measurement is taken from the part that fixes to the frame and not the sash. The real hinge length could be shorter or longer based on the manufacturer of your old windows. Also, when choosing the width of your hinge, the majority of upvc windows can be fitted with a 13mm stack height but should your old window frame is 17mm wide, you should select the option for this. You can also opt for the 4mm packer to make up for the difference. The hinges are available in two different directions (1 left and one right). Screws are not included with the hinges. If required, these screws can be purchased separately. We recommend using our upvc window hinge repair screws. These screws are designed to increase the performance of your hinges and allow them to work smoothly for longer. They have a reduced friction design and a better weather seal that is fitted with a new nylon reducer cap.

Restricted Hinge

Standard hinges can make it difficult to open windows fully. The restricted child safety friction hinges are a solution to this problem and are a great solution when ventilation is required but access to clean up or escape in case of fire is not possible. They work by restricting the amount the sash can open and allowing the override of this restriction with the push of a button. They are available in 13mm and 17mm stack heights. They can be used for top and side-hung windows.

The Nico Restricted Egress Friction Hinge blends the advantages of a standard restrictor as well as a fire escape hinge to provide an efficient and easy way to comply with building regulations. It is suitable for side-hung and top opening uPVC windows and is available in 17mm and 13mm stack heights. It is supplied in a pair, where one hinge is restricted egress and the second is unrestricted, allowing one hinge to be installed on the lower part of the sash, while the other is attached to the top.

These uPVC restrictive hinges have been tested to BS6375 part 2. They are intended for use on a window that cannot be opened fully such as a small children's bedroom. The mechanism limits the extent to which the sash is able to open to 100mm for safety and re-engages once the window is closed.

These uPVC friction-style hinges can be used with all types of windows. They are especially useful for windows that are difficult to reach, such as those in three-storey homes or those that require a ladder. They can be paired with our selection of security enhancements like hinge guard protection plates or dog bolts to offer PAS 24 performance.

It is important to measure your existing window hinge in order to get replacements that are the same size. This can be done by looking at the picture gallery of the hinge and deciding where you want it positioned. The top-hung hinges can only be positioned on one side, whereas the side hung ones can only be put on one side.

Standard Hinge

Standard hinges use metal-to-metal connections and don't require additional components to reduce friction. It's available in a variety of finishes and fire-rated. For a quick way to determine the radius of your hinge lay it flat and then line up the quarter and dime in two corners. If the dime is more snug than the quarter, the corner is rounded by 1/4 inch; if the quarter fits better, it's rounded by 5/8 inch.

The right hinge can be the difference between making or breaking the appearance of your door. The style and finish of the hinges to your door will give it an attractive and cohesive appearance.
