Internships for students are a type of professional activity that, as you can understand from the name, is aimed at gaining experience, i.e. work experience and new skills. Often, employers do not pay for internships or do, but only with a minimum wage. And here one might ask, “What is the value of an internship if it is unpaid?”. Let's think about it.

Does it make sense to go for an internship?

An internship is professional experience plus a chance to get a job at a dream company. But, no one will bring both on a silver platter – a lot depends on the student and his/her determination.

As research by job search sites shows, students today are well aware of the value of the experience and skills they can gain from an internship. Thus, about 17% of students are ready not just to work without pay, on enthusiasm – they are even willing to pay extra for the opportunity to work in a large company.

But, it is important to note that in order for an internship to be beneficial and become an additional springboard to launch your career, it is important to choose the right company and program. Don't be afraid to ask questions and give feedback, this will show the employer that you are interested in the specifics of the company and want to be useful to it.

What are the advantages of an internship?

You can, of course, start your career without an internship. Many successful people have done so.

However, internships for students will be a great gas pedal and open doors to more attractive projects. Let's take a look at the pros of internships:

1. Work Experience. Many companies benefit from inviting students, as this is a great opportunity to attract promising interns before competitors do. In turn, for students – this is a great opportunity not only to gain experience, but also to learn the basic intricacies of the profession, to acquire new skills and abilities that will be useful in the future.

2. An additional line in the resume. It is an obvious fact: employers are more willing to hire those employees who have experience. Therefore, if you have registered for an internship according to all the rules, that is, under an employment contract and with a record in the employment book – you will already be favorably distinguished from other potential candidates.

3. Possibility of further employment. Companies spend time, effort and resources to train an intern. Naturally, the company will be interested in hiring a student who already has work experience, has proved himself during training. There are many situations when the trainee is immediately offered a place in the staff.

4. Useful acquaintances. Internship is not only work experience, but also getting to know new specialists and the ability to establish contact with them. Communicate, share knowledge, ask questions of professionals – all this will be useful to you in your future work and everyday life.
