After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It's a change from the ballads of previous albums and features some heavy rock. This album was their first album to go platinum in North America.

During ??? ???? for the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name with an entirely different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick.
