Buying a Tandem Double Buggy

If you have twins or children very close in age, a tandem double buggie is a great choice. They are smaller than side by side buggies and are ideal for small spaces such as doors, public transport, and terrain that is rocky.

Some convert into travel systems to include two carrycots or car seats. They are typically heavier, longer and less stable than a single pushchair.

Convertible

There are a variety of options to add a second seat or changing a single stroller into a double. The UPPAbaby V2 is a spacious, gorgeous stroller. It can easily be changed from a single to a dual by adding the rumble seat. However, it's expensive and less maneuverable than other dual strollers due to the fact that the second seat is located in front of the front seat. Nuna Demi Grow offers a similar option, but it lacks storage underneath the seat when it's used as a double stroller.

Other alternatives include all-terrain twin buggies as well as fixed-wheel joggers which can be used to accommodate two children. They are more expensive but they are designed to last longer on rough terrain, and come with higher resale prices.

Reclining the seat independently

If you require a double buggy that is able to transport children of different ages then you're going to require a model with an recline independent for both seats. This allows your child of a higher age to rest in the back while the baby is in the bassinet and the reverse.

Think about the size of your pushchair to determine how easy it is for you to get through doors and on public transportation. If you have extremely narrow doors, it may be worth considering a side-by-side pushchair like the Mountain Buggy Duet which has the advantage of having a footprint that is similar to a single buggy but can still take 2 seats and car seat adaptors.

Tandem buggies generally are a little longer than side-by-side models, and aren't as difficult to maneuver around kerbs however they can be able to accommodate a bigger range of seat/carrycot/car seat combinations so can be a good option for twins or siblings of different age. These buggies are more expensive than single buggies to double, but they're worth it if you intend to keep it for a number of years. They also hold a good amount of value when sold once your children are old enough to use it.

cheap double buggy allows you to place your child in an ideal position for naps or observation. This is particularly important if you have a younger child in the rear seat who will be inclined to lie down and sleep while the older child would prefer to sit up and look around their surroundings.

Some brands have a unique design that allows the back seat of their vehicles to fully recline into a position that is almost flat, perfect for newborns. The iCandy Orange, for example has a stadium-style seating option that can be reclined in multiple positions. It also has a UPF 50+ canopy and peekaboo windows.

Larger than twin buggies

They are ideal for siblings with different age groups, and they allow you to get around without worrying about your children touching. They're typically a bit larger too with one seat placed behind the other, and typically offering a fully-flat recline for babies (or a more upright position for toddlers).

Mountain Buggy Duet is a popular option. It has the slimmest design that is side-by-side, and a footprint similar to the footprint of a single stroller. It also has an adjustable handle, which makes it easier for parents of different heights to push and a handbrake, which can be useful when you have to climb difficult terrains. It is suitable for use from birth, and can be used with a wide range of car seats and carrycots.

The iCandy Wave is another option. It folds in either mono or duo mode with just one click. Its innovative frame can be expanded to accommodate a second chair and it can be used with up to two carrycots or car seats making it a great option for older siblings who want to sit together and enjoy the view. It's a bit longer than other models, yet it's easy to steer and has soft suspension that can handle the kerbs.

There are also a variety of 3-wheeler inline tandems that are available - check out Phil and Teds' inline models or iCandy's Peach and Pear buggies, for example they provide stability and swift steering. They are often folded down to size a single buggy, which is helpful when you have trouble storing it at home or frequently need to lug it in and out of your car when using public transport.

Be aware that a two-wheeled buggy will be heavier and heavier than a single compact buggy. Make sure you know what you want prior to making a buy. You'll be taking it on and off subways, trains and buses frequently, so it must be easy to operate and manage. You might also have to juggle it onto and off the car seat when taking your children to nursery or school so you'll need to be aware it is able to be maneuvered in tight spaces.

From birth, you're a suitable candidate

If you're expecting twins, or have a second child after your first, you're likely to require an appropriate pushchair for the whole family. Double buggies tend to be slightly heavier, bulkier and cost more than single strollers. However, they are also easier to manoeuvre through narrower doors or around obstacles like curbs. Many are also compatible with piggyback ride-along boards (either from the manufacturer or through an accessory purchase) so you can transport three children at the same time.

Tandem pushchairs seat one child in front of the other, and they're often a better choice if you have two kids who are close enough in age to get along well. However, they're not 100% secure: Siblings in side-by-side seats may punch or kick each other, and kids who are different heights can argue over who sits higher. A tandem high-low model is able to solve this problem by elevating the seat to the rear, which prevents your child's height from being on the bottom and not getting the best view.

The iCandy Wave is a great choice for parents looking for an easy-to-use double buggy that converts to accommodate a newborn in a carrycot as well as an older child in the main seat. It features an intelligent frame that increases in size when you add a second child seat. It can also fold flat to make it a compact storage. The padded buckles, straps and seats are all of the best quality we have seen in any of our tests. The seats can be reclined independently, and the canopies are spacious and large with UPF 50+ protection as well as windows that can be seen from a distance.

The only drawback of the iCandy is that it's on the expensive side however, a good tandem will last for years and retain its resale value, so you'll probably recoup some of the cost in the long run. It doesn't have the same range of seating options as some of our other top choices however the iCandy is a good choice for families that don't want to spend a fortune.
