How to Choose the Best Infant Cribs

The crib is an extremely crucial piece for your baby's nursery. It isn't easy to pick the ideal crib, due to so many styles and safety concerns.

Find a crib that meets the highest safety standards, with no chewable or dangling components. We also recommend a stylish crib with a variety of mattress heights as well as modern, sleek design.

Safety

Follow the safe sleeping guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics when placing and assembling your child's crib. Avoid placing any objects that could cause injury or harm to the nursery of your baby. This includes blankets, pillows and sheepskins. Also avoid bumper pads, stuffed toys, and blankets. Your baby should also not sleep with any teddy bears dolls or stuffed animals larger than 15 inches. These items can easily get caught between the crib bars or be stuck in them. They could also be taken in by the mattress.

The best cribs for infants are made from materials that are free of VOCs, toxic chemicals and other harmful substances. They also comply with strict federal and state standards for structural safety. Furthermore, they're tested by a third-party for safety and quality (think GREENGAURD gold or ASTM, JMPA, or CPSIA certifications!). And they are designed to be sustainable and convertible so they can adapt to your child's needs.

It is essential to select cribs that meet current safety standards, no matter if you're purchasing a brand-new or used crib. Used cribs can become less sturdy over time due to the effects of humidity, age and heavy use. This could cause serious dangers to your baby.

The slats of your crib should not be longer than 3/8 inch (6 centimeters) and the hardware should be secure. Check the slats and mattress support rims and hardware for any damaged or loose components.

It is recommended to stay clear of cribs that were used by pets or children in the past, since their safety may have been compromised. Also, don't purchase or accept a second-hand crib with an incline side rail, which was banned by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in 2012 for security reasons.

Style

There are a lot of design differences between cribs, even though they all must meet safety standards. Some are just cosmetic, such as the slats have the same length or are spaced farther apart, while others could make it difficult to use and clean the crib. Certain features, such as drop sides and finials, aren't safe and should not be used, while others--like adjustable mattress height and casters/wheels--are desirable for many parents.

A crib isn't designed to be used as a place for toys or clothes. It's only intended to be an area where babies can sleep. It's also a good idea to put the crib on your registry to ensure that family and friends can help you get one when the time arrives.

Cribs come in a variety of sizes and shapes however, the ones we prefer are those that combine style and function. The Storkcraft Equinox is a minimalistic crib that looks stunning. It's also GREENGUARD Gold certified, which is essential for any product that is free of toxics, and it can convert into a toddler bed and daybed (toddler conversion kit available separately).

Other cribs have an older-style look like the DaVinci Jayden 4-in-1. It's a classy crib that can be incorporated into large nurseries, but it occupies more floor space than the smaller minimalist options and has exposed hardware that some may find distracting. Additionally, it has only three mattress height levels, which is less than half the competition and it's not as sturdy as some of our other picks.

The Babyletto Hudson is another option with a more modern look. Its concealed hardware and all-round mesh increase airflow and make it easier to see baby, which Dr. Casares says is an important aspect for new parents. It can be raised to ease colic and reflux. This is suitable for babies who are 6 months and the birth. It's also GREENGUARD certified gold and comes with a mattress that is also a match. It's important to remember that this bed is more expensive than other top options, and it requires an additional conversion kit for toddler beds.

Adjustable Mattress Height

It is crucial that your baby's crib mattress is the right height. This will prevent your child from climbing out of the crib, which can be fatal or dangerous. A higher mattress can also protect your baby from heat exhaustion or suffocation.

A quality crib will have slats or railings that are adjustable that let you raise or lower the mattress as your baby grows. Most good cribs will also include a conversion kit so you can turn the crib into an adult daybed or a toddler bed once your little one outgrows it. It's also a good idea for you to choose a crib that is tested and certified by a third-party organisation. The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association seal and GREENGUARD Gold Certification are two examples. These certifications ensure that your baby's crib is free of any chemicals or finishes.

The Graco Sweet2Sleep Crib one of the most highly-rated cribs available, and it's simple to put together, with a straightforward layout that doesn't contain any complicated pieces or parts. The sides of the crib are smaller than those of other cribs. However, one parent test subject said that their child was sleeping well and the crib was in good condition when she gave it to a friend as her second child.

Stokke Sleepi Crib is another excellent option. It features an oval shape that creates a modern appearance. It is a little more expensive than other cribs, but its durability and features are worth it. It can be easily transformed into a bassinet or toddler bed and comes with wheels that make it easy to move. It comes with a canopy that can be used to create a space more like a womb for your baby. This is a chic design to any nursery.

The only drawback to this crib is that it doesn't include a mattress, which you'll need to purchase separately. However, it's a secure and comfortable crib that can grow with your child from a newborn to a toddler.

No Dangling or Chewable Parts

The safest cribs are those that do not have chewable or dangling components. If something is hung over or below the crib, it could cause the rails to pull or cause strangulation. Babies are very grabby. If parents decide to decorate their crib with decorative items or toys, they must make sure that the items are securely secured and are not within Baby's reach.

In addition to the safety features of our best cribs for infants, we also consider how simple it is to assemble. The crib should be simple enough to assemble by yourself, without the need for special tools or a large amount of time. Most parents report that assembling a modern crib takes less than an hour, and the included instructions are generally clear and easy to follow.

It is crucial to choose a crib that lasts for many years. For long-lasting use, choose a convertible crib that can start at the beginning of your child's life until a toddler bed and finally an adult-sized bed.

see post for a 4-in-1 convertible crib is the Ikea Nestig Cloud Crib, that can be used to replace an infant bassinet during the first months, and later convert into a toddler bed, daybed, and a full-size bed. It's designed to last and is available in a variety of colors, so you can match it with your nursery's theme.

Another option that is a great choice is the Stork Craft Equinox 3-in-1 crib. This stunning, minimalist-style crib has a low profile that allows petite parents to reach their child and calm their child. It also has a great reputation for quality and is available in cherry, white, espresso, and natural pine colors.

This crib is Greenguard Gold Certified for finish quality and environmental protection, and it's constructed from sustainably-sourced New Zealand pine that is free of toxins such as lead and phthalates (BPA). It also surpasses standards set by the government such as ASTM, CPSC and JPMA. The only thing missing is a toddler rail, which you can buy separately. This is a good option for those who want an affordable, high-quality crib that will last for a long time.
