Buying a Tandem Double Buggy

If you have twins or children similar in age, a tandem double buggy is a great choice. They are a bit smaller than side by side buggies, and are perfect for tight spaces like doors, public transport, and rocky terrain.

Some are able to be converted into travel systems that use two carrycots or car seats for children. They can be heavier, longer and less stable than a single pushchair.

Convertible

Whether you're looking for a convertible single-to-double stroller or want to add a second seat to an existing one, there's many options to choose from. The Vista V2 from UPPAbaby is big, beautiful stroller that can easily be converted from a single to a double by adding the rumble seating (available separately). It is more expensive and less maneuverable because the second seat is placed behind the first seat. Nuna Demi Grow is a similar model, but it lacks storage under the seat when used as a double stroller.

Other options include twin buggies with all-terrain wheels, and joggers with fixed wheels that can be used to carry two children. They tend to be more expensive, but they're made for long-distance trips over rough terrain, and may have more resale value.

Reclining seat recline independently

If you want a double stroller that can accommodate children of different ages, you will need one with independent seat recliner for both seats. This will allow your child's older to rest in the back while the baby sleeps in the bassinet, and the reverse.

You'll also have to consider the width of the pushchair as this will impact the ease of get through doors and on public transportation. If your doors are narrow, you may want to consider a side by side pushchair like the Mountain Buggy Duet. It has a footprint similar to a single stroller, but it can accommodate two seats and car seat adaptors.

Tandem buggies generally are slightly longer than side-by-side models and therefore aren't difficult to maneuver around kerbs but they can accommodate a wider range of car/car/seat combinations, so can be a good option for twins or siblings of different ages. These buggies are also more expensive than single to double buggies, but they're worth the cost if you plan to keep it for a number of years. They'll also keep a good amount of value if sold when your children have outgrown the buggie.

Another crucial thing to look for is whether the seat backs are able to recline independently of each other since this will allow you to place your child in the most optimal position for napping or observation. This is important if your child is in the back seat and wishes to take a nap while the child in the front prefers to sit up to observe the surroundings.

Certain brands have a distinctive design that allows the back of their vehicles to recline fully into a position that's nearly flat, which is ideal for newborns. For example the iCandy Orange has raised stadium-style seating and can recline both the toddler seat included and the add-on RumbleSeat into various positions so that your children have a the option of deciding where to sit, as well as offering an excellent UPF 50+ canopy that has windows that can be seen from afar.

More spacious than twin buggies

They are great for siblings of different age groups, and they allow you to move around without worrying about your children touching. They're usually a bit longer with one seat positioned behind the other. The seats can be reclined completely for babies or placed in an upright position for toddlers.

Mountain Buggy Duet is a popular option. It is the slimmest design side-by-side on the market, and a footprint comparable to the footprint of a single stroller. It comes with an adjustable handle that makes it easier for parents to push, and a handbrake which is helpful on steep hills. It can be used from birth and is compatible with a variety of car seats and carrycots. This means it makes an excellent travel system.

Another alternative is the iCandy Wave, which has the convenience of a single click to fold and can be utilized in a duo or mono mode. Its clever frame can be expanded to accommodate an additional chair and can be used up to two car seats or carrycots. This makes it an ideal choice for older siblings that wish to be seated together. It's a little longer than other models, but it feels light and has soft suspension for the kerbs.

There are a variety of 3-wheeler tandems with inline tires that offer stability and swift steering. Check out Phil and Teds inline models, or iCandy Peach and Pear buggies. smallest double buggy can often be folded into one buggy if you have limited space at home, or need to transport it from your car to the bus station.

Be aware that a double wide buggy will be heavier and bulkier than a single compact buggy. Be sure you know what you want before you purchase. You'll need to take it on and off subways, trains and buses regularly so it needs to be easy to operate and manage. You may need to juggle the car seat in and out when you take your child to school or the nursery.

From birth, you are a suitable candidate

Whether you're expecting twins or you have a child following your first, you're likely to need to find a pushchair that fits the whole family. Double buggies tend to be a bit heavier, bulkier and more expensive than single strollers. However, they can also be more maneuverable in narrower entrances or around obstacles like curbs. Many double buggies work with piggyback boards (available from the manufacturer or as an accessory). This allows you to carry three children at the same time.

Tandem pushchairs put one child in the front of the other, so they're generally a better option for families with two children who are close enough in age to be able to live well. However, they're not 100% secure Side-by-side chairs can kick or punch each other, and kids who are different heights can argue over who sits higher. This issue can be resolved by a tandem high-low model that elevates the seat at the rear. Your older child will not be sitting at the bottom of the car and won't get much of an eye.

The iCandy Wave is a good alternative for parents looking for a convertible double buggy with a carrycot that is able to accommodate both a newborn and an older child. It features an intelligent frame that expands in width when you add the second child seat. It also folds flat to make it a compact storage. The padded seats, straps and buckles are all of the highest quality we have seen in our testing. Both seats can recline independently and the canopies are spacious and large with UPF 50+ protection and windows that can be seen from a distance.

The only downside of the iCandy is that it's a bit expensive however, a good tandem will last for years and will retain its resale value, so you'll likely recoup some of the cost in the end. The iCandy doesn't come with the same seating arrangements as our other top picks. However, it's an excellent choice for families that don't want spend lots of money.
