Buying a Bedside Crib For Travel

Mums love this crib's size it's larger than the size of a Moses basket but smaller than a cot bed. It's also foldable down to a quarter of its size and then put in a handy bag for travel.

Just remember that the crib should be used only for sleeping. Toys such as pillows, blankets and pillows are dangers to suffocate.

Safety

If you are looking for a travel cot, ensure that the manufacturer is adhering to all safety standards. One good starting point is the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website, which can let you know whether or not a certain crib is being removed from the market. You should also select the right size for your baby's bed, so it doesn't slip into gaps in the sides of the crib or create a suffocation hazard.

When choosing the right bassinet or crib, look for one that meets the newer safety standards, which were updated in 2022. Also, avoid cribs with a long history, modified cribs or drop side cribs that have been used for travel as they have not been evaluated and could pose dangers to your baby's health.

A travel crib must be strong and well-constructed. Check for missing, loose or broken screws as well as other hardware. If you're using a playard, it should be fitted with mesh windows and strong walls for air flow. The crib slats shouldn't be more than 2 3/8 inches apart to avoid the baby's head and limbs from becoming trapped. Don't put any toys, blankets or toys that are stuffed with animals in the crib. These objects can choke or strangle your baby and should be removed from the crib as soon as your child is able to push up on their knees and hands or before five months of age or when they reach 5 months of age, whichever comes first.

It's also important to look often for loose or broken hardware and screws, especially when traveling with your infant. Take all plastic out of the crib too.

If you are using a portable crib for your baby, make sure it's not positioned directly under a large window. Windows pose a fall risk and if your baby rolls into it, they could get injured. It's recommended to keep your baby's sleeping space away from windows, even if they are old enough to roll over. If your baby starts to roll over during sleep, it's best to wake them up to prevent injuries.

Portability

Whether you're going on vacation, have family staying over, or just need a secure bedside crib for sleepovers with friends, a portable crib (or playard, as they are sometimes called) is an excellent option. These foldable contraptions have a comfortable mattress that can hold children up to 15 kg. They are simple to put together and compact when closed.

MFM home testers are awestruck by the BabyBjorn travel crib due to the fact that it is easy to fold and store. Its easy one-handed drop down panels are also a breeze for parents with a bleary eye. It's not our tiniest pack-and-play play, but with just 15 pounds, it's an adequate weight. It also comes with normal handles instead of a backpack strap that some people find more comfortable.

The Joie Kubbie Sleep is another fantastic option. It includes a bassinet for the bed and a crib into a compact unit. It is ideal for holidays and overnight stays with friends and family. It's not the most affordable option but it does come with many options, including a basket for storage, soothing night lights that change color as well as lullabies and white noise, to help your child fall asleep.

It's also easy to keep clean, with machine washable and wipeable fabric. In spite of its size and weight (it's on the bulkier side when opened) it's surprisingly light at just 12kg and fits neatly into a compact, practical bag included ideal for trips away from home. It comes with six different height settings and a tummy tilt to help with reflux or colic babies, and is able to fit beds of all sizes. It's also very easy to set up and our MFM tester being able to have it up and running in a mere 10 minutes. You'll need to buy an additional mattress however.

Feeding

It's important that your baby is safe and secure when you travel, whether for business or pleasure. It is better to buy a bassinet or crib designed for travel than to use one that you already have. They are smaller and come with mesh sides, which allows parents to observe their baby without causing any disturbance to them. They're also light and can be easily transported between places. These also comply with the safety standards set by the American Academy of Pediatrics and have not been recalled.

If you must use a crib alongside your bed, it is recommended that you put your baby on their back. The bed should be free of blankets, pillows and stuffed toys. This kind of sleeping arrangement increases the risk of SIDS. If you are forced to co-sleep on occasion, ensure that you only do this while your baby is asleep and you are at all times dressed and awake.

There are many kinds of cribs for babies and newborns.

Some are shaped like an oversized crib or Moses basket, and others have sides that can be put to the bed of the parent. This allows parents to access their child at any time during the night to soothe and feed them, while avoiding the dangers of sleeping with their child. The AAP warns against this because of the risk of suffocation. Examples include the Arm's Reach Clear-Vue Bassinet, which is a bedside sleeper that connects to the side of a mattress for a parent. This is a great option for older children, as the sides can be raised so that you can reach the infant without lifting them out of the bed. The travel cot that has an integrated crib that can be removed enables you to easily lift a sleeping baby for feeding or other care.

Sleeping

Bedside cribs allow you to sleep peacefully with your baby. They sit next to your bed during the night, allowing you to reach them easily for night feeds and monitor them without disrupting their sleep. Some cribs have a drop-side that you can lower to make it easier for you to do this, while others come with a height adjustment, so they will fit in your bed at home or away.

While it used to be advised that infants sleep in their own separate bedroom, there is a growing preference for parents to co-sleep with their infants. This arrangement, also referred to as rooming in, allows babies to stay close to their parents, while remaining safely separated in their own crib or bassinet. There are several types of co-sleepers that are available, including the iCrib which is designed to be portable and can be placed on the top of your bed or a standard crib. This model includes a light frame, a mattress that can be removed and is able to be folded up for easy storage. It also comes with the Joie Roomie Go crib, which fastens to the edge of a bed and has 7 height settings that can be adjusted as well as an incline for the tummy to aid in reflux and colic. The crib was loved by our MFM home testers for its convenience and compact folding. it's also available in a variety of colors.

You can also purchase bedside cribs that are freestanding, such as our Lilly or Alain which you can put on top of an existing bed frame. They have a movable side barrier that slides down to allow you to take your baby to a dinner at night, but the crib is completely fully enclosed and your baby will continue sleeping soundly during this period. These models meet the new BS EN1130:2019 safety standards that require a 120mm gap between your mattress and the child's crib.

There are also cribs for travel available. They are designed specifically to be taken along on the road. They are usually smaller and lighter than a standard crib which makes them more convenient to take into and out of hotels and cars. Munchkin Brica, for example can be put together in under a minute and folded down in three pounds. twin bedside cot is therefore simple to move and lift.
